Poor expansion, too few tracks: Private railway company in Bavaria sees considerable pent-up demand at Deutsche Bahn.

But too little happens.

Munich - Bavaria's railway lines are largely in a state of development that dates back to the steam locomotive era, some tracks have even been dismantled in recent decades.

Due to a lack of meeting opportunities, there are many delays.

A private railway operator is now unpacking how much the condition of Bavaria's* rail network is slowing down train traffic.

Trouble at railway companies Go-ahead: 80 percent of delays are due to external causes

The British railway company Go-Ahead has been serving the electrified railway line Munich-Lindau for a quarter of a year.

In a first assessment, the private railway operators sound the alarm.

The route is completely underdeveloped, as it is largely single track.

A problem that commuters also suffer from on other routes.

After a problem with the start, 90 percent of the trains are now on time, according to Go-Ahead.

But: "We find that almost 80 percent of our delays have causes that we cannot influence," says Go-Ahead spokesman Fabian Amini.

"Whether it's storm damage on the rails, a level crossing where the barriers don't close or long, single-track sections that are occupied.

In such cases, our trains have to stop.”

The problem: the local train from Go-Ahead (blue) cannot continue because the Eurocity Express to Zurich (red) is blocking the only track.

Track expansion leaves a lot to be desired: route to Lindau only single track

In particular, the 107-kilometer single-track section from Geltendorf to Hergatz (Lindau district*) causes waiting times in oncoming traffic.

From Geltendorf in the direction of Munich, there are only two tracks that Go-Ahead has to share with S-Bahn, local, long-distance and freight traffic - this quickly leads to traffic jams on the rails.

Amini: "We would like to get our passengers to their destination on time, but unfortunately that's not always possible."

The Allgäu route is no exception.

“In Bavaria, single-track routes are not an isolated case”;

says Norbert Moy from the Pro Bahn passenger association.

Half of the 6,000 kilometers of railway line are single track, including 31 percent of the Munich S-Bahn network.

Here are some examples:

  • The Werdenfelsbahn from Munich-Mittenwald southwards from Tutzing.

  • The Südwestbayernbahn Markt Schwaben-Mühldorf-Freilassing.

  • The Oberlandbahn from Holzkirchen to Bayrischzell, Tegernsee and Lenggries with slow-moving sections because of the level crossings without barriers.

  • The S7 from Ostbahnhof or Höllriegelskreuth.

  • The S4 in the Grafing-Ebersberg section.

  • The S8 in the Seefeld-Herrsching section.

Moy: "The railway network* is financed by the federal government, but it is concentrating on the expansion of long-distance and freight networks." The federal government overslept decades in the expansion, many tracks were dismantled.

"The last three transport ministers came from Bavaria," says Moy.

There is now more money, but it takes many years to initiate a new project.

"Furthermore, the Free State was able to take the initiative and initiate projects and advance planning."
