It was a school building - and apparently also a target for the Russian invading army.

In Kharkiv, teachers, parents and former students tried to at least roughly repair the damage to the learning center.

During the night, a Russian missile hit the building, which had become a shelter for those seeking protection during the war.

Oleksandr, resident

»This is a civilian building.

It's a school!

They didn't manage to take the city, so they decided to destroy it.

Just like the fascists did.

But what the Russians are doing right now, even the fascists didn't do, they are supposed to choke on their own body parts.

It's cruel, so pointless.

What did this school do?

What did the kids do wrong?

What I have done wrong?"

The city in north-eastern Ukraine has been under fire from Russian forces for weeks.

According to their own statements, Ukrainian troops were able to launch successful counterattacks in several towns.

Around a quarter of Ukraine's 44 million inhabitants have been forced from their homes.

Next Tuesday there will be another attempt at peace talks in Istanbul.
