Ultra-long flights are back in the air

Several air connections of more than 15 hours are again offered by a few companies, in particular to and from New York.


There are journeys where it is better not to forget your book.

With 18 hours and 35 minutes of flight, the direct link between Singapore and New York is one of them.

After two years of Covid-19, Singapore Airlines has resumed its daily flight from Singapore-Changi Airport and Newark-Liberty Airport.

According to the professional site Air Journal, the ultra-long-haul line operated on A350-900 ULRs has been back since March 24 with departures at 11:35 p.m. arriving the next day at 6:00 a.m.

Return flights leave the USA at 10:25 a.m. and land the next day at 5:10 p.m.

Singapore Airlines is the only one to operate on this 15,343 kilometer long route.

It adds to another line operated by the same company, connecting the city-state to New York-JFK, five kilometers longer but of the same duration.

This Ultra Long Range version, with an extended range, has 161,000 liter tanks in the wings, instead of 141,000 for the standard version.

The twelve cabin crew members are each entitled to four hours of rest during the flight.

In the cabin,

only 161 passengers only in business class (67) and premium economy (94).

The comfort of the latter is not very far from that of the business classes of certain other companies...

Auckland-New York in 17 hours

A sign that air transport is gradually recovering from the pandemic, other companies have announced the return of flights of more than 15 hours.

This is the case of Air New Zealand will launch a direct flight this summer between Auckland and New York-JFK, 14,194 kilometers in nearly 17 hours in a Boeing 787.

Departures are scheduled on Monday, Thursday and Saturday at 7:40 p.m. to arrive the same day at 7:55 p.m.

Return flights will leave the United States on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 9:55 p.m. and land two days later at 7:30 a.m.

After a two-year hiatus in international flights, New Zealand plans to reopen its borders to international tourism on May 1, 2022.
