Sun, drought and Sahara dust characterized the weather in Bavaria in March.

This will not change much in the last days of the month.

Munich – Will Bavaria soon become a desert?

You can almost legitimately ask yourself this question after March 2022.

Let's take stock and review the month.

This is how March 2022 went in Bavaria

Sun, check:

It has not been as sunny as this March in Germany since records began in 1951.

The previous record was set in 1953*.

There were a total of 195.2 hours of sunshine back then.

According to wetteronline.de

, this value was already

broken on Saturday, March 26 – by a full six hours.

The sunniest place in Bavaria was the Zugspitze* with 238 hours.

But the value for Munich is also impressive.

219 hours of sunshine in the Isar metropolis and that five days before the end of the month.

Drought, check:

Because one high has been pushing the handle into the other for weeks, hardly a drop of rain has fallen.

"If it stops raining by the end of the month, it will be the driest month since records began* - i.e. since 1880," says Guido Wolz, head of the German Weather Service in Munich.

Although rain has been announced for the end of the week, it is still unclear whether it will really come and how much will fall from the sky.

Sand, check:

On March 15, the sky over Bavaria began to turn reddish.

For days, a veil of the finest Sahara dust lay over Bavaria* like a photo filter.

It did rain in some areas, but that didn't improve the situation.

On the contrary.

The red sauce settled everywhere.

Especially on the cars.

After all, there was a lot to do for the car wash operators.

And as if March hadn't set enough records already, it added another with the Sahara dust invasion.

It was the strongest Sahara dust event since 2008 *, confirmed researchers across Germany.

Weather in Bavaria: It's getting cold - but before that the Sahara dust will come back

The question now is how will the weather* continue?

Will camel caravans soon be moving through the foothills of the Alps?

Probably not.

But our connection to the largest desert in the world does not break.

For the middle of the week, clouds of fine, red dust from the Sahara have again been announced for southern Germany.

The concentration will probably reach its highest level on Wednesday. At least that's what the weather model of the University of Athens predicts.

After that, however, the Bavarian 1001 Nights romance is over.

In fact, rain was announced.

At the start of April, the now rare wet comes down from the sky again.

But apparently we can't do without extremes anymore.

Because it shouldn't just rain.

In some parts of Bavaria, snow and sleet showers* cannot be ruled out either.

"The maximum values will rush down by 15 degrees," writes qualified meteorologist Dominik Jung in his forecast.

Changing weather: your opinion

Weather in Bavaria: temperature drop from the middle of the week

Before that, however, it will remain sunny and warm.

Today, Monday, March 28th, will probably be the warmest day of the year.

The thermometer is climbing above the 20 degree mark in many places.

In a band from Würzburg to Passau, it is almost as warm as early summer.

The temperatures only drop a little in the north-east (Hof: 17 degrees) and in the south-west (Kempten: 18 degrees).

In any case, the sun shines throughout the Free State all day long.

Hoch Peter*, the last in a long line that began with Hoch Kai at the end of February, is leaving us tomorrow, Tuesday.

And it suddenly gets colder.

wetteronline.de is

already predicting the first drops for Bavaria on

Wednesday .

In addition, the temperatures are plummeting.

Hof overdoes it again and crashes to four degrees.

The rest of the Free State moves between seven and 13 degrees.

However, the bottom has not yet been reached.

Values around freezing point and snow are even possible again for the weekend.

"Now it's normal April weather.

Because April does what it wants,” sums up weather expert Jung.
