Woman suddenly turns on the Autobahn: A643 blocked

Due to a wrong-way driver between Wiesbaden and Mainz, the A643 motorway was completely blocked.
Wiesbaden – An 81-year-old from Ginsheim-Gustavsburg was driving her Mercedes on the 643 motorway from Wiesbaden in the direction of Mainz on Sunday afternoon, March 27, 2022 at 2:27 p.m.
Her 83-year-old husband was also in the car.
After a while, the driver realized that she was not going in the direction she had intended to go.
She pulled over at the Äppelallee exit, turned the Mercedes across the two lanes and finally drove the wrong way around on the autobahn.
A 60-year-old BMW driver from Hofheim, together with his wife and 2-year-old child, grasped the situation with presence of mind and was able to avoid a collision thanks to emergency braking.
A 19-year-old Mercedes driver from Wiesbaden behind him was no longer able to make an emergency stop, resulting in a rear-end collision.

Since all cars had come to a standstill in the left lane and emergency services had been called on site, the lane in the direction of Mainz had to be closed for an hour and a half.
The 19-year-old and the 2-year-old child were taken to nearby clinics as a precaution.
In addition, the 81-year-old had to give her driver's license to the police.
The vehicles suffered total material damage of EUR 20,000 (dpa).
It was not until mid-March that an accident occurred near Wiesbaden.
