At least three dead and 20 hospitalized after a chain crash in Pennsylvania

Dozens of cars and several trucks crashed Monday in the middle of a snow storm that caused poor visibility conditions on Interstate 81.

At least three people were killed Monday in a multi-vehicle crash involving several dozen vehicles on Pennsylvania's Interstate 81 freeway, authorities said.

Schuylkill County Medical Examiner Dr. David J. Moylan confirmed all three deaths Monday afternoon, though he cautioned that the search was not over because vehicles were still burning.

"I suspect it could be higher," he

said.

The Schuylkill County Office of Emergency Management said the accident occurred around 10:30 a.m. local time in northeastern Pennsylvania.

John Blickley, the agency's deputy emergency management coordinator, said authorities believe a snowstorm clouded visibility and likely contributed to the crash, The Associated Press reported.

Between 40 and 60 vehicles were involved in the crash, including multiple cars and trucks, the emergency management agency and state police estimated.

At least 20 injured people were taken to nearby hospitals in four different counties

for medical treatment, Blickley said.

Three of the trucks that collided caught fire and other private cars were also on fire, he added.

It is not known for now what the cargo trucks were transporting.

David Beohm of the Pennsylvania State Police said Monday afternoon that they had not yet been able to investigate why the vehicles caught fire.

"We can't do anything while there is an active fire," he explained, adding that they were facing a logistical challenge in containing the fire because there were no hydrants in the area and they had to bring water in tankers from far away.

The road was covered in snow when the accident occurred.

"All it takes is one person to hit something and then you have to get off the road, but when you continue to drive at high speed on a highway, this is what happens," he added.

The people who crashed, including those with minor injuries, were taken to an industrial park in Minersville where a reunification center was set up.

Videos on social media showed the moment a tractor-trailer collided with a dump truck, spinning it 180 degrees, while another truck began belching smoke and orange flames into the air.

An SUV also crashed into a sedan, whose driver was on the side of the road and managed to avoid the cars in the snow and fog.

The person who posted the video did not immediately respond to requests for additional information from The Associated Press.

The meteorological authorities had warned this Monday about

poor visibility conditions due to a snow storm.

“There are very intense snow flurries where, if you drive into them, you can go from a partly cloudy or sunny sky to an instant blizzard in a matter of seconds.

That's why they're so dangerous," said Mike Colbert, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
