An e-bike rider set off on a tour in the Kenzen area in sneakers and an airy cycling outfit.

But the 60-year-old got stuck in the snow.

Peiting/Steingaden – The 60-year-old left Halblech (district of Ostallgäu) for the Trauchberg circuit on Sunday and headed towards Unternogg via the Wasserscheid.

What the man had not considered in view of the warm spring temperatures: On the north side, the paths were still covered with snow.

When he finally got stuck on his e-bike in the deep snow, the man called his wife and told her that he was lost.

The problem: because the battery of his mobile phone was empty after the phone call, the Steingaden-Peiting mountain rescue service who was alarmed could not contact the 60-year-old to find out his exact position.

In order to make any headway in the search for the missing person on the heavily icy forest roads, the emergency services had to put snow chains on their rescue vehicle.

At the same time, the operations manager informed the mountain rescue team in Kohlgrub and Unterammergau (Garmisch-Partenkirchen district) so that they could search the Madersteig area and the paths on the Wilden Jäger from Unternogg.

As dusk fell, a police helicopter was called in to check the areas around the Geometer hut on the Wasserscheide.

The missing man was finally discovered in the last evening light.

The helicopter, which also had a local mountain rescue service man on board, landed at a suitable spot and picked up the stray.

He had left his exhausted e-bike near the “Angst” area.

For the 60-year-old, the rescue came just at the right time.

A night in sneakers and an airy bike outfit would certainly have led to severe hypothermia, according to a mountain rescue service spokesman.

A total of around 25 emergency services were involved in the search.
