A shooting near Tel Aviv has killed five people, Israeli police and emergency services said Tuesday.

The attack began in the ultra-Orthodox city of Bnei Brak, just east of Tel Aviv, before continuing and ending near where Bnei Brak becomes Ramat Gan.

A police spokesman said a preliminary investigation found that at least one assailant used an assault rifle on civilians in various locations before being shot dead by local police forces.

Bnei Brak Mayor Avraham Rubinstein pleaded with residents to stay indoors in the hours after the shooting and told Israel's Channel 12 to wait for instructions from the police as he fears there may be more accomplices or attackers.

It is the third such attack against Israelis in a week, bringing the total death toll since last Tuesday to 11.

Last Tuesday, four people were killed in the southern city of Be'er Sheva when a man who had previously been arrested for supporting ISIS stabbed three of the victims and ran over the other with a motorcycle.

On Sunday, two ISIS-affiliated assailants killed two people and wounded six in a shooting attack in Hadera, some 80km north of Tel Aviv.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack in Be'er Sheva and Hadera.

ISIS had not claimed responsibility for an attack in Israel since 2017.

In a tweet, Israel's Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said: "Israel is facing a wave of murderous Arab terrorism."

"My heart goes out to the families who lost loved ones tonight and I pray for the well-being of those injured," she wrote.

“The security forces are working.

We will fight terror with perseverance, stubbornness and an iron fist.

They won't move us from here."

Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai said in a tweet that he has ordered heightened security at schools in coordination with Israeli police.

There is still no claim of responsibility for Tuesday's attack.

But Palestinian militant groups such as Islamic Jihad praised the attack.

Hamas called the attack a "heroic" operation, while the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades said it was "a clear message written in blood in response to the Negev summit," referring to the meeting earlier this week in Israel of top diplomats from the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Bahrain, Morocco, the United States and Israel.
