Virologist Streeck calls for more personal responsibility - and more freedom.

He gives an assessment for summer, autumn and winter.

Frankfurt – The temperatures are rising and the number of new infections with the corona virus is also increasing.

The hospital utilization is limited for the moment.

Experts see a real chance of relaxation in summer, but warn against autumn and winter.

Virologist Hendrik Streeck recently explained which measures could make the next Corona winter better.

In his opinion, the mask requirement could fall completely in the summer.

An omicron vaccine or even a combined corona vaccine could complete the vaccines already approved and thus make a winter with less harsh measures possible.

In an interview with

watson

, Streeck now talks about his demand for more personal responsibility in Germany.

In the opinion of the virologist, infection can no longer be avoided

The phenomenon of the double peak in the number of new infections is not surprising, explains Streeck.

This had already been observed in the spring of the previous year and would also occur with many respiratory diseases.

The current increase is therefore not worrying, even if the new omicron subtype BA.2 seems to be even more contagious and could sometimes be a factor in the increase in the number of infections.

When it comes to how to deal with the increasing number of infections, Streeck is clarified: "Infection is something that we cannot avoid." The question that needs to be asked is how best to deal with an infection.

According to the virologist, the best answer to this is: “Get vaccinated in order to be prepared for the infection.”

"The hairs on the back of my neck stand up" - Streeck criticizes the wrong perception of vaccinated people

According to the virologist, the best protection would be if you were vaccinated and then had contact with the corona virus.

"As a result, a more robust immune response gradually builds up on the mucous membranes." However, he finds it problematic that people who have been vaccinated often think that their mild course of the corona virus was mild because of the vaccination.

"The hairs on the back of my neck stand up because we don't have a comparison of what would have happened if you hadn't been vaccinated." There are no good studies on this either.

The exact symptoms of three times vaccinated at Omikron in comparison to unvaccinated is little secured.

Streeck sees a need for more personal responsibility when it comes to wearing masks

"Masks are the means that we know are the best way to prevent infection," explains Streeck.

Even if an infection should occur, the infectious dose could be lower and a milder course could possibly result.

According to Streeck, however, there are no comparison options here.

If the infection rate is high, you should use the mask, he says.

The distinction between a summer mode and a winter mode - also in official communication - is desirable in Streeck's view.

If the incidence of infection decreases, the mask can also be omitted: "In the long term, however, we have to get to the point where people decide for themselves how they deal with this virus and whether they want to wear a mask, for example.

And that's exactly how we should leave it up to the shops and institutions to decide whether there should be a mask requirement."

Models should capture different scenarios and enable preparation

According to Streeck, the outlook for the coming time with Corona requires different models.

These would have to record what could happen if, for example, the Delta variant comes back or what it means if Omicron stays.

Other questions need to be clarified.

Like how to react to another massive wave, if that were to happen.
