Many people are simply fed up with the coronavirus pandemic, including vaccinations.

Do we now have to be boosted again and again?

Munich – A second booster vaccination – a fourth vaccination dose against the corona virus * is currently popular for everyone over 70 years of age.

Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) called for more fourth corona vaccinations.

According to Lauterbach, the booster update will soon be officially recommended by the Standing Vaccination Committee (Stiko) for 60-year-olds at risk.

Fourth Covid-19 vaccination: Who should get a second booster shot according to Stiko?

Who should get a fourth corona vaccination with an mRNA vaccine from Moderna* and Biontech/Pfizer*?

The current Stiko recommendation (as of February 15, 2022) provides for a booster after the booster "for groups of people who are particularly at risk of health or are exposed".

People over the age of 70 should receive another dose of vaccination no earlier than three months after the first booster vaccination, as should residents and those cared for in care facilities.

But according to Stiko, people with immunodeficiency from the age of five and those working in medical facilities are also included.

Here is an overview: According to Stiko, who should have a second booster vaccination - and when.

Fourth corona vaccination: double booster soon for everyone over 60 years of age?

Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach recently emphasized that all people who are older than 60 and have risk factors should be vaccinated against Corona a fourth time.

However, the Stiko recommendation for the second booster vaccination does not yet apply to everyone.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has now approved a fourth dose of the Corona vaccine from Biontech/Pfizer and Moderna for people aged 50 and over (March 29, 2022).

The FDA recommends a gap of at least four months between the second booster and the first.

An additional booster vaccination would increase protection against severe Covid 19 disease, the statement said.

There are no additional security concerns.

For people with a particularly weakened immune system, the FDA approved an additional booster shot - this is a fifth dose of vaccination.

Corona pandemic: vaccinate against corona every year?

Many are longing for the end of the corona pandemic.

Yes, it will be some time before the virus becomes endemic.

As early as May 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) assumed that the coronavirus could become an endemic virus.

An important point, also when it comes to vaccination, as epidemiologist Prof. Timo Ulrichs explains in the ntv interview.

"We don't have to assume that we'll have to keep vaccinating in the coming years - not even for the older ones.

If we assume that this coronavirus will eventually become endemic," epidemiologist Ulrichs summarizes.

And further: “Then going through these infections ensures that the immune system in the entire population is refreshed again and again.

Unless there is a completely different variant around the corner.

But, that is not to be expected if this pandemic is also slowly ebbing worldwide.”

End of the corona pandemic?

This transition from the pandemic to the endemic "it doesn't happen overnight, there are several stages," explains virologist Christian Drosten in the NDR podcast "Coronavirus Update" (Tuesday, March 29, 2022).

"We're quite a way into the process.

The infection mortality in Germany has fallen to about 0.1 percent with vaccination and under Omikron, that is relevant. ”It is the area, like in a severe flu season.

But, with influenza, the total wouldn't be as high because there wasn't as much transmission.

With influenza, everyone has had an infection umpteen times in their life, so there is immunity on the mucous membrane and at least adults are not so infectious.

"It makes a flu season run out on its own."

But you need a whole series of infections to build up mucosal immunity and thus protection against transmission.

virologist Christian Drosten

"With Sars-CoV-2, we still have a minority of the population who have had mucosal virus contact, but you need a whole series of infections to build up mucosal immunity and thus protection against transmission.

The infections that are now taking place over the summer will probably not be sufficient for this, ”emphasizes Drosten.

He still expects corona measures in the coming years, said the virologist in a

time

interview.

In his opinion, booster vaccinations in autumn for risk groups could keep the infection rate under control.

Booster vaccinations currently show good protection against a severe course of the disease in the case of a coronavirus infection, including with Omikron.

"The duration of immunity will continue to concern us," said the Frankfurt virologist Sandra Ciesek in the NDR podcast.

It remains to be seen whether an Omikron-adapted corona vaccine will be available in autumn and will be sufficient.

And whether there is actually no other variant around the corner, as epidemiologist Prof. Timo Ulrichs hopes.

And important: A vaccination currently protects better than an infection.

Unvaccinated people who become infected now develop some immunity.

However, this is not as strong as the triple vaccination.

In order to achieve comparable protection, they would have to become infected several times, reports the NDR.
