The Minister of Government of Ecuador, Alexandra Vela, resigned this Tuesday from her position, after 8 months at the head of that ministry in the government of President Guillermo Lasso.

The president accepted her resignation.

Vela reported that his resignation is due to the fact that "it does not coincide" with the line established by the president to face the political crisis, exacerbated by the obstacles in recent months for the approval of bills proposed by the Executive in the National Assembly.

“In multiple meetings, I have stubbornly maintained that, for the good of your government, the reforms that the economy needs and the permanence of democracy is better than a cross death.

Undoubtedly a risky path, but at the same time unavoidable if it is necessary to carry out the profound transformations that Ecuador requires, "said Vela in his letter of resignation.

The “crusader death” is the constitutional mechanism that allows, according to article 148 of the Magna Carta, the President of the Republic to dissolve the National Assembly when he considers that functions that do not correspond to him are being arrogated, prior favorable opinion of the Constitutional Court;

or if he repeatedly and unjustifiably obstructs the execution of the National Development Plan, or due to a serious political crisis or internal commotion.

This power may be exercised only once in the first three years of his mandate, but within a period of 7 days the Electoral Council will call for new presidential and legislative elections.

And, until the installation of new Assembly and president or president, Lasso could govern through decree-laws of economic urgency.

In her resignation, the now former minister maintains that the Assembly is right now the main threat to democracy in Ecuador.

“We have verified that many of the political forces, far from defending ideological convictions and seeking the common good, turned politics into the expression of corporate and personal interests and in some cases used the representation granted at the polls for blackmail and extortion. putting dark interests before any political agreement, including impunity for those who liquidated our democracy and looted public resources,” Vela added.

Precisely this Tuesday, President Lasso declared that the “cross death” mechanism is ruled out for the time being.

And he added that he will govern through decrees, regulations and other tools, given the obstacles presented by the Assembly.

“We are not going to sit idly by, we will use other mechanisms to promote investment, generate employment and reactivate the economy.

I have very little hope in the Assembly, Ecuador cares little for them and it is very easy for them to turn their backs on the country,” said Lasso.

According to the president, the dialogue is open but "there are no agreements with any political party," he specified.

Over the weekend, the president of the Assembly, Guadalupe Llori, referred to the situation.

“It will not be part of an Assembly of distribution, compromise or blackmail.

If there are acts of corruption, they must be investigated and those responsible definitively separated from the institution”.

His statements came after President Lasso asked the control authorities to investigate a group of assembly members for allegedly asking for economic benefits, in exchange for consigning their vote to approve a bill.
