Damascus - Sana
With the participation of experts from Arab countries, the Regional Office for the Near East and North Africa at the FAO, the European Water Society and the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture “ACBA”, the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD) organized, via video conference technology, a training course for Arab experts and technicians on non-traditional water uses in irrigation agriculture in arid and semi-arid regions.
Dr. Nasr El-Din El-Obeid, Director-General of the organization, stressed the importance of benefiting from non-traditional water that spreads in significant quantities in the Arab region, especially in light of climate changes and the resulting disasters.
He explained that ACSAD attached great importance to the reuse of non-traditional water in Arab agriculture, including saline, brackish water, treated water and gray water, and it reached important results through the implementation of research and projects on the optimal and safe, health and environmental use of this quality of water, which was circulated to Arab farmers and interested parties.
Dr. Al-Obaid pointed out that the organization was interested in rainwater harvesting projects, and many of them were implemented in Arab countries, such as the water harvesting and good agricultural practices project, the project to supply local communities with water, and the integrated management project for rain fall areas.
The two-day course, with the participation of more than one hundred experts and technicians in the field of non-traditional water uses in agriculture, aims to review the efforts and experiences of ACSAD and the Arab countries in this field, and the procedures and recommendations to harness this type of water to be a substitute for traditional water in light of the drought conditions experienced by the Arab region as a result. to climate change worldwide.
