Expelled from home, terminated for personal use, unpaid rent: There are many reasons why people do not have an apartment.

The district of Weilheim-Schongau wants to help.

District

– There is the mother who stayed with her children in a relative's 50 square meter apartment.

There's the young man sleeping on a friend's couch.

There is the couple who have set themselves up at a campsite.

Being homeless doesn't necessarily mean you're homeless, but it does mean an emergency.

Outside help is often useful.

The district is therefore considering setting up a specialist office for advice and support in the event of homelessness.

The Social Committee has already discussed the topic in the Peißenberg underground hall - and unanimously welcomed the proposal.

"It is high priority that something like this is set up," said Michael Asam (SPD).

Georg Leis, manager of the district office and also Eberfing's mayor, confirmed: "From the point of view of the communities, this is a very important issue." And Peter Steigenberger, head of the social welfare office, confirmed in the committee: "It's something that people care about."

Herzogsägmühle is already looking after those affected

He explained to those present that since 2018 the district has been financing the specialist center for the prevention of homelessness, which is operated by the Diakonie Herzogsägmühle and within the framework of which it has created several contact points in the district.

But their area of responsibility ends as soon as someone loses their home.

“Who will take care of the people then?” asked Steigenberger.

Currently also the Diakonie, since April 2020 with the project "Outreach Social Work".

But the funding from the Free State is running out, the district is in demand.

And Steigenberger believes that setting up a specialist office that could also carry the social welfare work is the right way to go – closely linked to the existing advice center for avoiding homelessness.

"Both are closely related, it's a smooth transition," said Steigenberger.

However, he also emphasized that the employees can only advise and mediate, “but not create living space, we lack that.

We are dependent on the help of third parties.” The fact that many Ukrainians are now coming to the district makes the situation even more difficult.

That is why a contact point is important.

Initially limited to the end of 2024

The Office for the Prevention of Homelessness shows how quickly such an offer is established.

In 2020 there were 86 counseling cases there, in 2021 there were 123. This year there are already 106 - including cases that were already being looked after before the turn of the year.

If the district committee also agrees to the establishment of the specialist department after the social committee, it should initially run until the end of 2024.

It is calculated with costs of 80,000 euros for the current year and 100,000 euros each for 2023 and 2024.

However, nobody at the meeting in the underground hall believed that the consultation would no longer be necessary afterwards.

"The specialist department must exist for more than two years," said Asam.

"I'm sure."
