Interview with Lia Schneider-Stöckl: After lockdowns and restrictions caused by the pandemic, the Hollerhaus gallery owner is looking ahead.

Irschenhausen

- Finally: Museums and galleries have been able to reopen since mid-February with the 3G rule.

In the months before, the lockdown and pandemic-related restrictions made cultural life almost impossible.

Gallery owners and artists were on hold.

Our employee Sabine Hermsdorf-Hiss spoke to Lia Schneider-Stöckl, owner of the Hollerhaus in Irschenhausen.

The former estate of the village tailor, with its eventful history and location of the filming of the "Bull von Tölz", has served as a gallery with readings, exhibitions and concerts for decades.

Ms. Schneider-Stöckl, honestly, how good can you paint?

My grandfather painted a lot.

He originally wanted to study at the art academy, then came the First World War.

My father was also very talented and interested in art.

He drove or flew to important exhibitions all his life.

I once started with reverse glass painting.

The artist from Icking, Alinde Rothenfusser, meant 'You're painting now amal'.

I hung up two pictures, a bit hidden, at an exhibition.

That's it for my career.

The pictures in the Hollerhaus were taken down during the lockdowns.

How do white walls in the gallery feel?

That was anything but nice.

However, I thought even more about the artists whose works should have hung here.

They make a living from selling their art, had prepared for the exhibitions – and then suddenly everything collapses.

What was your first thought when you had to cancel everything because of the lockdown?

At first we didn't know how long it would last.

Either way it was incredible.

There had never been anything comparable.

For every gallery owner, the idea of not being able to open on a weekend was incomprehensible.

And suddenly everything was closed for months.

It was decisive for all of us.

How many exhibitions were planned for the past year?

Ten - if that's even enough.

How many did you line up?

In the summer we were able to hold at least two, but only under strict conditions.

What did they look like?

With our size, only three visitors were allowed to enter the exhibition room at the same time.

In between, there was always airing, of course there was a mask requirement.

There were also entrance controls – the visitors had to present their proof of vaccination.

At first we still kept address lists.

People took part in a lot, but also understood it.

Everyone was careful and responsible towards themselves and the others.

Did you have to change the opening hours because of the regulations?

I tried to be flexible about it.

If someone checked in at a certain time, one of us was there too.

As always, my family has been very supportive.

Everyone worked together to get it done.

The Hollerhaus is not only known for its exhibitions...

Correct.

All evening events such as flamenco, readings or music have been cancelled.

It would have been impossible to do this with a reduced number of visitors and at the same time to observe all the restrictions.

There would have been too many people on stage alone.

Then not a single guest would have had room.

Also interesting: "The Peasant Princess" - a local novel brings history to life

Why didn't you offer live streams like other cultural venues?

Unfortunately that didn't work.

Simply because we don't have the necessary technology.

In summer we could use the garden.

When the Isartal brass band played here with Klaus Doldinger as a guest, we were able to celebrate a nice party in the open air and by far.

This is of course weather dependent.

We also noticed that at the end of the concert (laughs).

How did visitors react when the gallery reopened?

Some were so happy and glad that they could go out and attend an event again.

The first concerts in particular were very well attended.

Others preferred to wait and see before going to places where there were several people.

Has the clientele changed as a result?

Not really.

We address different people with different offers.

And we have a large catchment area.

What do you have planned for the near future?

In short: really great things: From a start-up exhibition to Quadro Nuevo with their "Odyssey - Journey into the Light".

I am looking forward to it.
