OnePlus 10 Pro: an alternative to the Galaxy S22 and Pixel 6 but not necessarily the best cell phone

2022-03-31T16:06:22.838Z

The OnePlus 10 Pro is a good cell phone, it takes good photos and charges very fast, but it lacks some things compared to its main rivals.

The OnePlus 10 Pro is a cell phone that comes with an attractive price and good features, but will this be enough to make it the best Android phone in 2022?

Let's go into detail on what it offers and not to answer this question.

Design

The OnePlus 10 Pro has a design that is relatively attractive and sets it apart in the market even though it was undoubtedly inspired by the Galaxy S21 Ultra.

The front part with its 6.7-inch screen is not very different from the previous generation, but the back part has a giant camera module and I think that beyond the lenses of the iPhone 13 that definitely look like a stove, I think the OnePlus 10 Pro has the most similar module to this appliance because it has four "burners", although one of them is simply the flash and not another camera.

That camera module is attached to the metal edge just like the Galaxy S21 Ultra did, but while that frame is still metal, in the OnePlus 10 Pro the camera module integrates ceramic instead of metal like in the S21 Ultra. .

This certainly makes it attractive because it shines a lot and there I think you can see how OnePlus and Oppo work more and more together, since that ceramic is very similar (possibly the same) to the one found in the body of the Oppo Find X5 Pro.

However, in my more than two weeks of use I have found that this also makes it very difficult to keep that camera module clean and I have also found that this makes the lenses get dirty more easily than on the Galaxy S21 Ultra and even on the Oppo Find X5 Pro because I didn't have that problem when I tried it.

On the positive side, the OnePlus 10 Pro's matte glass body repels fingerprints very well and feels great in the hand.

That smooth glass that reflects sunlight like sandpaper is pretty much the same material and feel as the Xiaomi 12 Pro that I loved so much.

It's worth noting that my test unit was the black one.

Something I really like is that despite having a large 5,000mAh battery, the OnePlus 10 Pro feels slim (8.55mm) and actually is compared to the Galaxy S22 Ultra (8.9mm).

The OnePlus 10 Pro has dual speakers and offers good sound quality for a cell phone, although I wish it had a little more bass and the lower speaker is much more powerful than the earpiece.

In any case, it seems to me that with some content it divides the sound from the right side of the left side well to offer a slightly more immersive experience, although when holding it blocking the lower speaker the volume is reduced exponentially.

In the US, the OnePlus 10 Pro only has a single SIM card slot (no microSD either, and the Dual SIM version is for the international market only) and is not waterproof certified unless you buy it from T-Mobile. , where it does arrive with IP68 certification.

A OnePlus spokesperson told me that while the unlocked version of the 10 Pro isn't certified, the phone went through various tests to make sure it can withstand sweat, humidity, and splashes.

This I think is my biggest disappointment with the OnePlus 10 Pro. I know that not everyone cares about water resistance in the same way, but considering that we have phones like the Pixel 6 ($699) and the iPhone 13 ($799, al Just like cheaper phones like the new iPhone SE ($329), Pixel 5A ($449) and Galaxy A53 5G ($449) that have some resistance certification put it in a bad spot. became almost standard nowadays on the top phones on the market, it gives reliability and the OnePlus 8 Pro and OnePlus 9 Pro were IP68 certified no matter where you buy it, in a way the 10 Pro feels like the OnePlus 9 that it wasn't the company's most advanced phone and had the same water-resistance certification limitation (only T-Mobile had it).

By the way, the OnePlus 10 Pro still has the slider to control the cell phone's

ringtone

, located on the right side edge.

Performance

In performance, the OnePlus 10 Pro was smooth, responding quickly to my commands.

Something that I found curious is that using facial unlocking feels slower, as if it gets stuck for a second thinking about what to do.

This OnePlus cell phone comes with Android 12 with the custom Oxygen OS 12.1 interface.

The general experience is good, but it is not the same as what OnePlus offered years ago and focused on a practically pure Android interface.

It bears some resemblance to Samsung's One UI, as does Oppo's ColorOS.

It works fine anyway, but I don't think it's the best interface OnePlus has put on its phones.

In performance tests or

benchmarks

, the OnePlus 10 Pro achieved similar results to the Galaxy S22 Ultra (with Snapdragon), although they were generally a little lower in general processing, but better in graphics processing.

For example, on Geekbench 5, the 10 Pro scored 1,002 and 3,323, while the S22 Ultra scored 1,211 and 3,244.

In 3DMark, the 10 Pro achieved 11,675 and the S22 Ultra 10,746.

By the way, the OnePlus 10 Pro offers 5G compatibility, but in the United States it does not have mmWave, only Sub-6.

Battery life and fast charging

The OnePlus 10 Pro often lasted my work day, but not my full day.

This means a very average battery life that was close to 5 hours of screen time on.

The highlight of the 10 Pro is that its fast charge allows it to go from 0 to 100 percent in just over 30 minutes.

In the US, the 10 Pro comes with a 65W (65W) in-box charging adapter, but globally it comes with 80W (80W).

However, OnePlus says that the difference in charging between these two is only 2 minutes (34 vs. 32 minutes) and in my tests it was impressive how fast it charged at 65 watts.

Additionally, the OnePlus 10 Pro also offers 50-watt wireless charging (47 minutes from 0 to 100 percent) and reversible wireless charging.

cameras

The OnePlus 10 Pro has three rear cameras, a 48-megapixel main camera, a 60-megapixel wide-angle camera, and an 8-megapixel telephoto camera.

Take great photos with good lighting, vibrant colors and good detail.

This cell phone competes with the Galaxy S22 Ultra and often beats it, but it does not mean that always.

In the wide-angle camera, the OnePlus 10 Pro offers good and sometimes surprising results, but in my use it did not reach the level of the wide-angle of the S22 Ultra.

  • Redmi Note 11 Pro + 5G: an improved cell phone that charges in just 15 minutes

Even the 3.3x zoom of the OnePlus 10 Pro also often achieves better results than the 3x zoom of the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

However, the colors of the OnePlus 10 Pro are not always the most accurate and vary more.

At 10x zoom or more, the Galaxy S22 Ultra wins.

When it comes to night shots, the OnePlus 10 Pro delivers good results, but often ends up with a lot of visual noise and doesn't quite reach the same level as the Galaxy S22 Ultra, Pixel 6 Pro, or Xiaomi 12 Pro in most cases.

The front camera is adequate, but sometimes struggles to control exposure properly and offers less detail than, for example, the S22 Ultra.

In video, the OnePlus 10 Pro offers good results and stabilization, but it is not necessarily the best camera for photos and I consider that it falls behind the S22 Ultra.

Price

The OnePlus 10 Pro is available at a price of US$899 for the version with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

In the world market, a version with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage is also sold, but it will be released in the United States in the future.

Conclution

The OnePlus 10 Pro is a very good cell phone that stands out for offering fluidity, fast charging (it includes an adapter in its box), it takes good photos and it feels good in the hand.

However, the lack of water resistance and its average battery life put it a step behind many, but while I think the battery life can be made up for by its fast charging, the water resistance is a clear shortcoming.

Also, your Android experience is no longer as pure as many would like.

I think it can be a good alternative to the Galaxy S22 Plus and Oppo Find X5 Pro, but I don't think it should be the first choice for most.

The Pixel 6 has a less attractive design, but its cameras are a bit more reliable, it has what I consider to be a better Android experience, it's waterproof, and it's $300 cheaper.

The Pixel 6 Pro has a similar design to the OnePlus 10 Pro and offers all the benefits of the Pixel 6 with a few improvements.

The OnePlus 10 Pro is good, but it doesn't stand out as much in the market as the OnePlus One, OnePlus 3/3T, OnePlus 5 or even the OnePlus 8 Pro did in their time.

However, the best OnePlus 10 Pro is undoubtedly with T-Mobile but as I mentioned there are the Pixel 6, the Galaxy S22 that costs US$100 less and although the Galaxy S22 Plus costs US$100 more (perhaps the same with some promotion) , has more storage options and these Samsung phones will also receive more Android updates as they have the promise of another generation and one more year of security updates.
