STORY – The war in Ukraine and the support given by China to Russia are likely to weigh down a little more the atmosphere of the Sino-European virtual summit, scheduled for Friday.

Ursula von der Leyen and Charles Michel would no doubt have dreamed of a better context to resume language with China, after more than a year of distended and degraded relations.

But, while its

"unlimited"

friendship with the Kremlin leads Beijing to remain ambiguous on the Russian war in Ukraine, it was decided to maintain the EU-China summit.

The meeting - virtual - takes place this Friday.

On one side, the heads of the two EU institutions as well as the High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell.

On the other, the Chinese president and prime minister, Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang.

This is the first time such a summit has been held since June 2020. But since the conclusion of the bilateral investment agreement in December 2020, the relationship has stalled.
