London-Sana

The British Office for National Statistics announced that 4.9 million people were infected with the Corona virus last week in the United Kingdom, a record number, according to a census published today, coinciding with the country's suspension of free testing as part of its strategy to coexist with the epidemic.

AFP quoted the office as saying, during a study it conducted on a representative sample of the population, "that there is an increase in the number of infected people by about 700 thousand compared to last week," noting that one out of every 13 people was infected with the Corona virus in England, and the percentage rose to 1 in 12 people. In Scotland, it is 1 in 14 in Wales and 1 in 15 in Northern Ireland.

The office attributed the reasons for the current rise in infections to the spread of the mutant Omicron, noting that hospitalizations also increased compared to last week, especially among those over 45 years old.

It is noteworthy that Britain ranks seventh in the list of countries affected by Corona after the United States, India, Brazil, France, Russia and Turkey, where since the beginning of the epidemic, more than 165,300 deaths have been recorded in Corona.
