The revival of the Albert-Kahn Museum: opening up to others and to the world

2022-04-01T12:13:06.418Z

After six years of closure, the autochromes of the Alsatian collector are once again visible in a completely redesigned case. An ambitious project led by the Department of Hauts-de-Seine.

From the Vallée-aux-Loups departmental park to Châtenay-Malabry, via La Seine musicale on Île Seguin, the future Grand Siècle Museum around the collection of Pierre Rosenberg and some fifty theaters and conservatories, culture is a trump card of the Hauts-de-Seine.

The Department is proud of its Culture Valley, which it finances with a percentage of its budget of more than 5%, well above the cultural 1% for which the Ministers of Culture are fighting.

In this valley, the Albert-Kahn Departmental Museum is a jewel but also a symbol:

"It is a major museum, with its collection of 72,000 autochromes known throughout the world"

, says Georges Siffredi, president of the Hauts- of Seine.

“Albert-Kahn testifies to our cultural project: to have quality and to open up to others and to the world, thus serving our population which is extremely contrasted.”

When it closed six years ago, the museum welcomed 110,000 visitors.

How successful will it be in its new configuration?

Far from being satisfied with a renovation, the Department, under the impetus of Patrick Devedjian, wanted to give the Albert-Kahn Museum a new dimension.

The Japanese "starchitect" Kengo Kuma has designed a new 2300 m2 building which dialogues with the garden, offers temporary exhibition spaces of 600 m2, and an auditorium.

The surrounding pavilions, the tea house have been renovated, as has the garden.

A restaurant will also open.

“Families and schoolchildren are at the heart of the project thanks to a family lounge in the center of the building.

It brings fun and educational aspects.

The museum will welcome schoolchildren there who will learn to explore the images and tell their story

,” says Georges Siffredi.

To rethink the Albert-Kahn Museum in this way, the Department has invested 60 million euros.

The visit to the museum is changed.

We came to spend an hour or two in this little gem, the time to look at the autochromes or to take a walk in the garden.

From now on, the visitor will be able to spend the day there.

The program of temporary exhibitions espouses the humanist and pacifist spirit of Albert Kahn, collector.

Thus, the inaugural exhibition will be devoted to the journey, from the first, undertaken by Kahn in 1909 to that of Curiosity on Mars.

A saving odyssey in these times of fire and blood.
