Charging stations - everything you need to know

2022-04-02T22:01:16.985Z

The electric car disconnects us from the fuel pump and connects us to the electrical outlet. How simple this transition is, what stands in the way and what are the expected problems in the future

The electric vehicle is already here, and those who do not notice, in Israel, happily embrace it.

Of all kinds and sizes, thousands of completely new electric cars have hit the roads this year, and this trend will only intensify.

If conservative forecasts are taken into account, in 2030 about 300,000 new and used electric cars will move on Israeli roads.

To keep these in motion, the charging infrastructure in Israel will have to keep pace, and offer charging capacity to hundreds of thousands of customers.

Those who drive an electric car today can feel the load on the positions, especially the ones that are fast.

It is not uncommon to encounter abnormal positions on the one hand, and those that are active, sometimes occupied.

Waiting half an hour for such a position to vacate does not exactly contribute to the electrical experience.

"One day there will be more charging stations than refueling stations," says Raz Sagi, CEO of Sonol EVI.

"This year we will deploy 50 stations at Sonol stations, in 2023 the amount will triple, in 2024 there will be no Sonol station without electric stations."

Such a continuous deployment is not simple, not cheap and does not immediately return the investment - “The infrastructure is very expensive, these are very, very expensive positions, profits will only be seen in 5-10 years.

The expectation is long-term. "

By the end of the year, Sagi expects a nice sequence of positions, "I believe that anyone who leaves any point in the country will find a fast or ultra-fast position within a radius of 50 km."

And fast charging is definitely the name of the game here, up-to-date cars and fast chargers can add hundreds of miles of driving in half an hour.

Ronen Aharon, CEO of ABB, claims that the fast positions are necessary today: “Today, the batteries are larger, especially in premium vehicles.

Significant travel distances are even 500 km.

And all this means that we need stronger and larger cargoes if a few years ago we started supplying 175 kg cargo three years ago.

Today there are chargers of 184 kW. Today we have a charger that is considered the fastest charger in the world, it is a charger of 360 kW it can charge four vehicles simultaneously 90 kW each.

And this reduces the load on the positions.

There are already places that are regularly occupied and people are waiting in line.

175 kg charger after 20 minutes 300 km it can release the position.

We also see one of the patterns that accompany the world of charging today is an increase in the power of cargo.

Not far off today we will see cargo of megawatts arrows.

That's where it goes. "

From these things it follows that such and other private companies understand the place to which we are going and make efforts to give them an appropriate technological solution.

The issue of public positions and their deployment is relatively simple.

When it comes to discussing private positions things are a little more complicated.

As mentioned, the amount of electric vehicles on the road poses problems, already today.

The most burning issue is the installation of private stands in public homes.

"We are aware of the massive entry of dozens of new models as Chinese manufacturers change the rules of the game in the automotive industry, with growth expected in the next decade of hundreds of percent each year," says Eran Rosenstein, VP of Operations at Schnep EV.

“We have solutions for charging vehicles for the private and business sector, our solutions are tailored to the customer's needs and requirements.

Our range of solutions enables charging for all types of vehicles in any method and we also represent a number of leading international companies in the world in the field of charging vehicles, trucks and buses. ”

In order to address all of these, a lot of electricity is needed, and it is in this country that already, breaking records is continuously needed.

So alongside the public positions, there is also the possibility of establishing a private position at home.

In the case of a private home there is no problem, but installing a stand in an apartment building or apartment tower, is a little less simple.

According to Dudi Lasri, CEO of Pelago, “The reality with the buildings is complex and not simple.

Today we know how to finance the building's electrical infrastructure - a cost that can reach tens of thousands of shekels.

We are here to stay there are 20 competitors but not all of them will stay.

Those who remain will be exposed to three elements of economic depth.

The second element is that many companies do not come with management positions to get on the wave. ”

There is also quite a bit of information that does not always reach the customer.

And this is something to pay attention to.

Those who buy an electric vehicle will usually get a position with it, but the infrastructure is a different matter.

And here to pay attention to which company to contract long term.

Lasri adds: “Part of our place in the market is to pour the information and as much as possible at the entrance to our site there are quite a few articles and articles about what is happening in the market and we publish a lot of information that sheds light on this field.

This site will be a central axis for all information in the electric vehicle market in Israel.

Certainly those who do not know and understand the field yet. "

This is a point worth dwelling on.

When purchasing a new electric vehicle, the buyer will usually receive a free charging station.

Some companies will also give the approved rider a standard installation at their expense.

The cost of such an installation is about NIS 1,900 and includes a connection of parking to the electrical panel at a distance of up to 30 meters.

If it is a parking lot with a reasonable distance from the electrical panel, the matter is not complicated or expensive.

Greater distance, can be a problem and will inevitably be more expensive.

At this stage, which requires a more expensive infrastructure, may require a commitment on the part of the customer towards the installing company.

"I highly recommend not entering into dubious deals that commit to a 20-year commitment, not rushing and being tempted to binding deals," Shraga Katz, CEO of EV Edge, tells us.

"There are a number of reputable and serious charging providers and I recommend checking out one of the reputable providers."

He adds: “This is a product that has service and warranty as part of the purchase.

Of course the warranty and service can be extended.

It is also possible to install smarter stations that issue an orderly report regarding the charging (for the purposes of offsetting tax and refunds) and their stations have a monthly service cost. ”

A second before signing an installation, to understand exactly what our needs are, what we are getting and who the company from which we are going to get the service.

The development of the charging network in Israel marks two paths.

On the one hand, slow charging infrastructure in homes and on the other hand, the deployment of ultra-fast stations on the roads.

Yossi Azaria, CEO of Zoko Energy, paints this picture clearly: “Consumption will be 70 percent home charging at night, and 30 percent in public charging and will be a little more expensive and probably faster.

"In my opinion, the Israeli will charge outside because within a quarter of an hour the battery will be full, he will not get up in the middle of the night to connect a charger, he will sit at the station, drink coffee and fill the car quickly."

Azaria also refers to the problem of electricity production in Israel, “We need to look at the production of electricity in the economy.

There are slight reserves, except for records in winter and summer.

"The state does not look at the general picture, but only refers to one section or another. We invest tens of millions of shekels in infrastructure, in smart positions, and there is no clear political outline for this area."
