Opinion | Before blaming the police - give them power Israel today

2022-04-02T21:55:18.182Z

The events of May 2021 should have signaled: The number of police officers and volunteers must increase by many thousands • Now we must act at lightning speed, in cooperation with the IDF, to deal with the urgent internal problems of collecting weapons

About a decade ago, a friend who lives in a nearby locality called me and reported that there were two casualties from stray bullets - one bullet hit a passenger vehicle and Bens missed the driver, and another bullet hit the chest of an innocent resident inside the locality and Bens did not kill him.

There are countless stories that residents of the Negev and the Galilee can tell about bullet whistles and gunshots every day.

At the same time, one can not ignore the dozens of ticking videos in which militant background melodies are accompanied by gunfire at gas stations, pirate ranges, ammunition depots with weapons and ammunition stolen from IDF bases, and giggles about the enforcement system and the embarrassing IDF in the face of riots and humiliations.

The State of Israel has allowed dozens of organizations to accumulate quantities of weapons that do not embarrass a military unit.

At the same time, those gangs are allowed to practice without interruption, and to make daily criminal uses of weapons against the civilian population.

A tremendous amount of blood has already been shed, including toddlers and innocent children, who have fallen victim to those gangs.

A study conducted by Hashomer Hahadash on the Israel Personal Security Index revealed that 49 percent of the Arab population feel insecure in their place of residence.

Regarding driving on southern roads, 78 percent of Jewish respondents said they did not feel safe driving on the arteries.

Beyond a few brave police chiefs, they see almost no systemic police action to massively gather weapons, or attempts to make a final decision and erase the infrastructure of criminal-nationalist terrorism.

This week, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett asked the Israel Police to collect the illegal weapons, and their answer was that this was an operation on a scale that the police could not afford.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with this claim.

The Israel Police is under a load of tasks that does not match the scope of its forces, and results in it failing to provide the public with the service it deserves.

It is not for nothing that we see a decline of tens of percent in the personal security index of the general public in Israel, and it seems that the situation is far from improving.

The events of May 2021 should have been a clear message that the number of police officers and volunteers - whether as part of a civilian guard or reserve activity - must increase by many thousands.

We do not have to say desperate yet, but we must act at lightning speed, in cooperation with the IDF, to deal with the urgent internal problems of collecting weapons by reserve units.

At the same time, it is necessary to establish adapted infrastructure under the Border Guard and the police, which will decide and eliminate the autonomous violent infrastructure that has accumulated power and capabilities that endanger the national security of the State of Israel.

If we act quickly - we will be privileged not to take part in the parade of folly, as the well-known article: "Everything is expected and authority is given" (Pirkei Avot).

Were we wrong?
