A Texas woman who said her 3-year-old son was fatally shot following a violent highway incident has been taken into custody and charged with concealing a firearm in the investigation, Dallas police said Thursday night.

Lacravivonne Washington, 26, also faces one count of endangering a child by having a weapon accessible to a minor, police said in a statement.

Washington's son died after she took the boy, who had been shot in the face, to a hospital shortly before 10 a.m. Monday, according to authorities.

The woman told police she had been involved in a violent incident on the highway prior to the shooting, but officers found no crime scene or evidence to support her claim.

A police affidavit obtained by NBC Dallas-Fort Worth indicates that the 3-year-old boy and two other children, ages 2 and 4, were not wearing a seat belt in the back seat of the vehicle, according to the outlet.

The document notes that investigators later found a gun in the glove compartment, according to the station.

It also cites an autopsy that found gunpowder residue on the 3-year-old's body indicating the shot was fired from close range, according to the station.

Online court records do not reveal an attorney who can speak for Washington.

On Thursday night, according to jail records, she was being held in jail.

Police have not publicly claimed that she fired the gun.

The two charges announced are endangering a child and tampering with physical evidence.

Police say the gun that was allegedly hidden belongs to Washington.

Kristin Lowman, deputy director of the Dallas Police Department's public information office, told the station that they have detectives "working around the clock to answer a lot of questions to figure out who's responsible."
