Berlin's Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey started the reading world record attempt.

The aim is to read aloud 24 hours a day for 21 days with regularly changing participants in Berlin.

It all started on Saturday, International Children's Book Day, on the 14th floor of the RBB television center on Theodor-Heuss-Platz.

It ends on the 23rd.

Berlin - April, World Book Day.

By then, more than 1,000 readers will be taking part at seven different locations across Berlin.

Giffey, patron of the project, had chosen the book "Der Mondscheindrache" by children's book author Cornelia Funke for her reading contribution, as the organizers announced on Saturday.

Immediately afterwards, the RBB director and current ARD chairwoman Patricia Schlesinger read from Sven Nordqvist's "How Petterson came to Findus".

In order to break the previous record, 19 days of reading aloud marathon must be surpassed.

To this end, at least 1,008 readers should take turns reading around the clock by April 23, taking turns every 30 minutes.

The conditions also include: No one may participate twice, everyone must read on site.

The initiator of the world record attempt is the LeseLounge association, which organizes readings in kindergartens and schools, among other things.

The world record attempt is supported by the Bürgerstiftung Berlin and RBB Media.
