Another episode in the royal drama: Jordanian prince Hamza bin Hussein, the king's half-brother, announced today (Sunday) that he is relinquishing his title and noted that he had the honor of serving his country.
In the letter, the former regent noted that he has been personally convinced in recent years that his father's principles, according to which he was educated, do not conform to the new way of the kingdom's institutions, and hence he relinquishes the title of prince.
Just last month, Prince Hamza sent a letter of apology to Jordanian King Abdullah over his recent house arrest, after he was allegedly suspected of involvement in a coup attempt in April 2021.
A letter published today by Prince Hamza read: "Last year our dear Jordan experienced a difficult situation and an unfortunate chapter that the homeland overcame with the wisdom of Your Majesty and your forgiveness. "My older brother, and our Hashemite family keeper - this is the hope to start a new page in the history of Jordan and the family."
The affair began with a series of arrests of senior Jordanian officials last year.
The Arab media then reported on an attempted coup, but the Jordanian chief of staff denied that the prince was arrested and claimed that he was only "asked to stop actions that harm security and its stability as part of investigations carried out by the security forces."
