Children's health status has always attracted social attention. The Department of Health published the "Children's Health Survey" in 2009, which provided a number of Hong Kong children's health data, laying a solid foundation for the government to formulate policies.

Children's health status has always attracted social attention. The Department of Health published the "Children's Health Survey" in 2009, which provided a number of Hong Kong children's health data and laid a solid foundation for the government to formulate policies. However, more than ten years have passed, and there has been no new round of survey.

The Civil Society Service Center has collected opinions from parents at the grassroots level and found that more than 80% of parents believe that the current health or nutrition assessment is expensive, and more than 70% believe that the current student health service cannot provide parents with nutritional guidance and knowledge.

The center urges the government to restart the child health survey and use the data and existing resources to make the most of it.

82.3% of grassroots parents can only undertake a health assessment of less than 300 yuan

The Civil Society Service Center will conduct a questionnaire survey from December 2021 to March 2022 to collect the opinions of 102 grassroots parents on the child health survey.

The survey results show that more than 81.4% of the families believe that the current health or nutrition assessment is expensive, and 82.3% of the parents surveyed can only afford assessment services under RMB 300.

Regarding the current free school child health service, more than 70% (71.6%) of parents believed that the current student health service failed to provide parents with nutritional guidance and knowledge.

In addition, 90% of the respondents agree or strongly agree that a child health survey should be conducted at least every five years to reflect parents' concerns on the issue.

This year’s research report on “Children’s Nutrition at the Grassroots Level” co-operated by Chumin Social Service Center and Hong Kong community nutritionists pointed out that before the intervention of spontaneous community services, children’s nutrition was unbalanced, reflecting the importance of policy and service intervention.

The Civil Society Service Center cooperated with a group of grass-roots parents to set up a "Working Group Concerning Children's Physical and Mental Health" to jointly speak out for children's issues.

The research team believes that the Children's Health Survey can provide data that inform policy and different service interventions.

The panel believes that the report more than 10 years ago may not be of great reference value today, so it is hoped that the government will restart the investigation and provide more support for the next generation of Hong Kong.

Neighborhood: there are services but no one is used, some people are not serving

Neighbors who participated in the group believed that the lack of substantive data meant that "there are services that are not used by people, and there are services that are not used by others."

Members hope that the relaunch of the Children's Health Survey will allow the government to obtain valuable data and make the most of its limited resources.

Members suggested that the survey should be restarted and renamed the "Children's Physical and Mental Health Survey" to face up to children's physical and mental health; and the living environment should be included as one of the factors affecting children's physical and mental development, and given weight to the research.

In addition, members believed that in recent years, many school children have been self-seeking due to mental health problems. The survey should assess the risk factors of children and conduct a children's health survey at least every 5 years.

As for children's nutritional expenses and daily necessities, they are also the main expenses of families. Therefore, members also believe that the current consumption voucher scheme should be extended to children. The amount is about twice the current child CSSA subsidy amount, which is about $6,000 to $7,000. To subsidize the current expenses for child development.
