The American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong recently announced the appointment of Dr. Eden Weng as its new president, effective September 1 this year.

The chamber of commerce pointed out that Weng Yi Deng is a senior business and education leader, and also has many years of experience in serving government and non-governmental organizations.

He will succeed Ms. Tara Joseph as president after five years in office.

He served as the Vice-Chancellor for University Development at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology from 2010 to 2017.

From 2006 to 2010 in Shanghai, he served successively as Managing Director of Li & Fung Group China Office, Managing Director of Toys R Us China and Vice President of Starbucks Coffee Company China.

Weng was President of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce from 1997 to 2006.

Eden Weng grew up in Hong Kong and holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa, a master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Washington in Seattle, majoring in mathematics.

He served in the United States Air Force and retired as a colonel in 1993.

Eden is also a member of the New York-based Council of Foreign Relations, a Justice of the Peace of Hong Kong, and a board member of the Hong Kong Ballet.

Mr. Joseph Armas, Chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, said that he was very excited to welcome Weng Yideng back to Hong Kong to lead the Chamber of Commerce.

His appointment was selected through global recruitment by the Board of Directors, who unanimously agreed that with his leadership, international and local business experience, he will bring positive benefits to the Chamber of Commerce and the future development of Hong Kong.

Ong Yideng said that he himself is eager to return to Hong Kong at this challenging time to lead the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong and work together for the Chamber of Commerce and Hong Kong.

It is hoped that based on my personal experience, I can work with the Board of Directors to promote the development of the Chamber of Commerce and bring benefits to its members and the business community of this international city.
