The Munich city council will initially not make a decision as to whether the Isar 2 nuclear power plant should continue to be operated beyond 2022.

The local politicians want to follow the federal government.

Munich - The Russian invasion of Ukraine has also sparked a debate in Germany about postponing the phasing out of nuclear power.

On Tuesday, the city council dealt with the question of whether the Isar 2 power plant should also be operated beyond the end of 2022.

Because the city has a 25 percent stake in the nuclear reactor near Landshut via Stadtwerke München (SWM).

Munich: CSU Vice Hans Theiss wants to keep Isar 2 running - "Turn every stone"

The CSU in the city council had put the topic on the agenda.

Group Vice President Hans Theiss said in the Economic Committee that in view of questionable gas imports one had to turn every stone and sometimes jump over one's own shadow.

The Isar 2 nuclear power plant produces twelve percent of the electricity in Bavaria.

It is number one in Germany when it comes to performance and ranks ninth worldwide.

"So we're not talking about a nuclear power plant here."

The Stadtwerke had announced that if the gas was lost, there would be difficulties with the supply.

"The security of supply is in danger." No one wants to rely on nuclear power forever.

"But as a bridging technology, we have to use it as long as that is justifiable."

Munich: Green Vice Dominik Krause wants to let the federal government decide

It is part of honesty that such discussions have to be held, said Green Vice President Dominik Krause.

"There are arguments for and against." However, it is not the city's duty to make a decision.

"It has to be done at the federal level.

If the federal government decides to keep the power plants running, then we have to go down this path.”

Together with the SPD, the Greens have requested not to make a decision at municipal level, but to wait and see how the federal government positions itself.

"We need an overall strategy," said SPD city councilor Simone Burger.

When it comes to electricity, it's ultimately about grid and voltage issues.

"If we say we don't want to continue operating the power plant and the federal government decides something else, then we can discuss a lot.

We won't be asked."
