In a message to the Nation almost at midnight, the President of Peru, Pedro Castillo, decreed the State of Emergency in Lima and Callao on Monday and announced the immobility of citizens from 2 a.m. on Tuesday until 11:59 p.m. the same day.

"I call for calm and serenity," said the president.

The decision comes after the road blockades that occurred in various regions of the country as a result of protests by various transport unions.

“In order to restore peace and internal order, the Council of Ministers decreed a State of Emergency, suspending the constitutional rights related to liberty and personal security, inviolability of the home, and freedom of assembly and movement in the provinces of Lima and Callao,” Castillo said.

The president's message comes after an extraordinary session of the Council of Ministers at the Government Palace led by the president, in which measures were discussed in the face of the protests by the carriers' unions in various regions of the country that began on March 28 due to rising fuel prices and that have left at least three people dead.

According to Provias, there are more than 44 points that have been interrupted on various highways nationwide and 86 that are restricted.

The Legislative Branch will continue with its scheduled agenda for today, Tuesday, April 5.”
