Isabela Merced presented her most recent single "Agonía" a month ago, a collaboration with the Peruvian DJ Kayfex in which the actress also pays tribute to her Peruvian roots.

The theme is inspired by the story "La Agonía de Rasu Ñiti" by José María Arguedas, a short Peruvian story in which they portray one of Peru's intangible cultural heritages, the scissors dance, which is also reflected in the production video.

The Peruvian story that captivated Isabela Merced and Kayfex

The inspiration for the song came after Kayfex showed Isabela Merced this story.

“Kafex showed me the story

The Agony of Rasu Ñiti

, and I also love that word, agony.

You feel something every time you hear that word,” says Isabela Merced to Zona Pop CNN.

"After listening to his beat and his track of the song, I felt a lot of passion and sadness behind the instruments," explained Isabela Merced.

Kayfex, for his part, is a follower of José María Arguedas, the author behind the story, which is why he wanted to show his compatriot this part of his Peruvian culture.

“He is one of the most recognized writers in Peru for his great anthropological work that he did with the culture of preserving and investigating various areas focused on art, such as music, crafts and in those investigations that I do about his career, I find myself with the agony of Rasu Ñiti, which is that of a scissors dancer who gives his last breath to defend his roots, to defend his identity.

And that's what I wanted to show Isabela with the story," Kayfex told CNN Pop Zone.

The Peruvian identity of Isabela Merced

And that search to defend identity and roots is something that Isabela wants to show with her new musical proposal.

Although she was born in Cleveland, United States, her mother is Peruvian, so she spends time in that country.

"It was always a dream of mine to be able to incorporate more of the history of Peru, but also my inspirations that have to do with the sounds of different Peruvian artists like Yma Súmac, I love her voice and her interpretation of the song

El cóndor pasa

" Elizabeth said.

Súmac, a legend in Peru and in the world of music, was an internationally known soprano.

She performed in some of the world's best known theaters, in 1951 she appeared in the Broadway play "Flahooley" and has her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

And precisely these elements that make Peruvian culture rich, is what the singer and actress wants to rescue and bring to 2022, but with respect, she explains.

Ayacucho, protagonist of the video

The video clip, shot in the city of Ayacucho, in the center of the country, shows Peruvian culture, says the singer.

The production was directed by Gustavo Ramírez.

"That video also has to do with the inspiration of our culture and what it has to offer and of art and history," adds Isabela.

The city is rich in culture and even UNESCO recognized it for its rich craftsmanship.

According to the San Martín de Porres University, ceramics, textiles and everything that is silver products are typical of the region.

Kayfex is from Ayacucho, so taking the production to the patio of his house was a great satisfaction.

"It's a city of art-based energy," says Kayfex.

"It is a city that still preserves this living art, it is one of the cities that are conservative in terms of the crafts that have been born in it," she adds.

One of the cultural and artisanal aspects that they wanted to capture in the video clip was the chandlery, declared Cultural Heritage of the country in 2020 by the Ministry of Culture.

It is a type of art used during religious celebrations such as Holy Week.

"To this day, the waxworks, which appears in the video, these white scenes are taken as an example... Some think that it is something else, but it is wax that is there, it is one of the oldest crafts that was born in Ayacucho" , adds the DJ.
