Masters: Tiger Woods, 25 years of Augusta and five unforgettable coronations

2022-04-06T04:50:33.592Z

The golf star, back to competition in his favorite tournament, lives a great story with the first Grand Slam of the year where he triumphed five times. Flashback.

The numbers speak for themselves.

In 23 participations, Woods was ranked 15 times in the top 10. The Tiger crossed the cut 22 times and missed only one (when he was still an amateur).

Exceptional regularity.

1997, a founding triumph

During his first participation as a professional, he crushed the competition like a puzzle to win his first Grand Slam title.

He became at 21 years, 3 months and 14 days, the youngest winner of the tournament.

A still valid record of -18 with a twelve stroke lead over the second, the experienced Tom Kite.

During the first round, however, he was at +4 before signing an incredible return to -6.

An inaugural 70 (-2), followed by a 65 (-7) and a 66 (-6) to put everyone in agreement.

The first man of Afro-Asian descent to win a major in men's golf, Woods revolutionized the discipline.

A feat followed by 43 million Americans connected to CBS.

The young Tiger shows unparalleled power in the drive (-13 on the

together 4 par 5) and mastery on the greens.

Birth of a giant.

There will now be a before and after Tiger.

2001 and the “

Tiger Slam

At the age of 25, he won his second Masters and his fourth consecutive Grand Slam, straddling two seasons.

Never seen.

He loops in his favorite garden the "

Tiger Slam

".

Tiger Woods, who then crushed the competition, had achieved the feat in 2000 of garnering the three Majors (US Open, British Open and USPGA).

With a total of 272 (-16), he outstripped his compatriots David Duval and Phil Mickelson by two shots and completed his triumph with a 5-meter enquired putt on the last hole.

Enough to shed tears of joy and relief on the green of 18.

2002, a double for the master of the place

Like Jack Nicklaus in 1966 and Nick Faldo in 1990, the Tiger signs the double and keeps his green jacket.

At the start of the last day, the Californian is in the lead with Retief Goosen.

And as usual when he is in the lead, Woods wins without shaking.

The Tiger roars more than ever and the competition does not hide its impotence.

2005 and the legendary chip that changed everything

That year, however, it was off to a bad start with a 74 (+2) inaugural.

And despite his magnificent 66 on Friday (-6), the Tiger was six strokes behind after two laps over leader Chris DiMarco.

Then, on Saturday Woods slammed a magical series of six consecutive birdies from hole number 7 to number 13 to sign a fabulous 65 (-7).

While he had a three-stroke lead over his pursuer DiMarco, at the start of the lap, the latter signed a final lap in 68, pushing the favorite to his limits.

And thanks in particular to a mythical chip investigated outside the green on number 16, Woods signed an improbable birdie and returned a last card of 71 to force the playoff, then the thirteenth in the history of Augusta.

2019 and the incredible winning comeback

His sensational victory at the Tour Championship in Atlanta in September 2019 allowed him to become 12th in the world again.

He was in 1199th place in the fall of 2017. Once again, he reinvented his legend and won his fifth Masters, his first major title for... eleven years.

22 years after his first title at Augusta, 14 years after his fourth (a record gap between two victories)!

While he was two points behind Fransesco Molinari on the edge of the last lap, Woods made the difference on Sunday on 15 and 16 with two consecutive birdies.

He wins at -13 while Koepka misses a 3-meter putt on the 18 to join him in the lead.

"

So much has happened on these last 9 holes in such a short time that I now know why I am bald

”, he laughs.

Thanks to a putt of 50 centimeters, he completes a monumental feat.

It's historic: the Tiger had never won a Grand Slam tournament by coming back.

And to think that Woods was almost considered lost to golf a year and a half earlier, after having to undergo a vertebral fusion….

In 2019, Woods made one of the greatest comebacks in sports history.
