Erding – Another pharmacy less in Erding: The Rivera pharmacy in Erding has been closed since Wednesday.

The reason: lack of staff.

Owner Ochsner can't find a branch manager.

Only a few months after the closure of the pharmacy on the beautiful tower, the next one is caught: The Rivera pharmacy on the street of the same name has been closed since Wednesday morning after a last night shift.

Reason: lack of staff.

The smaller providers in particular are fighting against structural problems.

The end of the Rivera pharmacy has been on the horizon for months, reports owner Tobias Ochsner.

The pharmacist now owns four pharmacies with his wife Lisa: the town hall pharmacy on Landshuter Strasse and in Sempt-Park, the Johannes pharmacy on Friedrich-Fischer-Strasse and the Schubert pharmacy in Taufkirchen.

In an interview with our newspaper, the largest pharmacist in the district explains the reasons: "Despite months of searching and many notices, I have not found a branch manager for the Rivera pharmacy." This task is not entirely trivial: "It has to be a full-time pharmacist who has a 40 -hour week and night shifts,” explains Ochsner.

It's a classic woman's job.

"Many of my colleagues want to balance work and family, the legally prescribed 40-hour week and the night shifts are not very suitable for this." Every eleventh night it is the turn of one of his branch managers.

Ochsner had agreed an interim solution with the district office until June.

But now his branch manager, who had a 25-hour contract, has quit.

"It's become too much for her." And because he couldn't find a successor, Ochsner was forced to give up the pharmacy.

However, the five employees, most of whom work part-time, need not fear unemployment.

"I'll put them in my other branches." There, too, the staff is rather scarce.

"I can now defuse the situation a bit," says Ochsner.

The lack of management positions is particularly striking, but according to him, the search for pharmaceutical technical assistants (PTA) and pharmaceutical commercial assistants (PCA) is also difficult.

According to the entrepreneur, there are generally too few pharmacists in Germany.

"Not enough people study pharmacy, and many migrate to the pharmaceutical industry after their studies."

There is also a structural change.

Ochsner reports: "The trend is towards larger and larger pharmacies in heavily frequented locations." In Erding, for example, this is the pharmacy in West Erding Park, which is open until 8 p.m. in the commercial area.

At the airport, the "Metropolitan Pharmacy" with several branches is even open regularly on Sundays and public holidays.

That also makes life difficult for the small pharmacies, says Ochsner.

"Many are owner-managed, many colleagues are of retirement age." The precarious situation is comparable to that of the aging general practitioner landscape.

The closure of the Rivera pharmacy also hurts Ochsner "because it was a small district pharmacy in Klettham-Nord with a lot of regular customers".

They now have to put up with longer distances to the city center.

Located in a side street not far from the district court, this branch was also not particularly conveniently located.

It is unclear what will become of the rooms.

The pharmacy at the beautiful tower was closed almost overnight in December.

Nothing was ever revealed about the exact reasons.

But its owner was already in his 70s.

This was a heavy blow, not least for the old people's homes.

There they had received individual tablet combinations for the residents.

After the end of these two pharmacies, there is still no shortage in Erding.

There are three more in the city center alone (town hall, Johannes and city pharmacy), plus the Sempt pharmacy on Gestütring, the Fuchs pharmacy on Zugspitzstraße in Altenerding, the town hall pharmacy in Sempt Park in Aufhausen, the campus Pharmacy in the medical center at the clinic and the pharmacy in West Erding Park.

The closure will exacerbate the night shift situation for the remaining pharmacies.

It's your turn more often now.

Pharmacies in the area around Erding are also included in the plan, including in Oberding and Moosinning.
