If possible, the city wants to decide in April whether there will be an Oktoberfest this year after the two-year Corona break.

Munich - At the foot of the Paulskirche, the construction for the spring festival has begun, at the same time there are already new thoughts about the Oktoberfest.

Even more than that: After all, the city under Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) wants to decide in April if possible whether a Oktoberfest can take place this year.

Many - innkeepers, showmen and the municipal economics officer Clemens Baumgärtner (CSU) - have already clearly spoken out in favor of tapping again on September 17th after two corona cancellations in a row.

But there are also skeptics, and now the first hosts are thinking aloud about a cancellation.

Oktoberfest 2022: If the Wiesn takes place this year, the prices will rise significantly

Not only moral concerns are in the foreground - like the question raised by Mayor Reiter, how can you plan a happy party while people are dying in Ukraine, but also economic considerations for restaurateurs.

Gas prices have exploded, you need additional staff for corona controls - but there will probably be fewer visitors.

That means: If the Wiesn takes place this year, the prices will rise significantly.

Up to 14.50 euros per measure are no longer unrealistic, as a restaurateur tells our newspaper.

"I have to calculate that to cover the costs." Maybe only four instead of six million visitors would come because the admission controls act as a deterrent.

Considerations like these drive up the price of beer.

Even with Oktoberfest experts in Munich City Hall, a price of 14 euros per measure is now considered realistic.

Hofbräuzelt host: "Many are still unsure whether they want to carry it out"

The opinion of the hosts is very divided, says Günter Steinberg, host of the Hofbräuzelt: "Many are still unsure whether they want to carry it out." It is not yet possible to calculate the costs exactly, also because of the increased gas prices.

"We have gas in the kitchen - for example with the chicken grills." Guests should expect price increases.

"There's a lot going through my head.

On the other hand: If the Wiesn is canceled again, this could damage the festival in the long term.

Legendary host Toni Roiderer (Hackerzelt) says: "I'm for a Wiesn - but only if it can take place under normal conditions that are reasonable for guests and employees." So without FFP2 mask, distance restrictions and additional security checks.

Because: “It takes ten weeks to set up, and the cost of setting up a tent is 1.5 million euros.

You can't earn that if the Wiesn doesn't take place under normal circumstances." However, Mayor Reiter said recently with regard to Corona: "I can't imagine an Oktoberfest without restrictions at the moment."

Will Oktoberfest 2022 take place?

Michael Käfer: "The Wiesn must take place!"

Despite this situation, not all hosts quarrel.

Michael Käfer, for example, says about the thoughts of cancellation: "I don't understand such considerations.

The Wiesn must take place!

There are good times and bad times – you have to go through them as an entrepreneur.” Wirte spokesman Christian Schottenhamel agrees.

There is always an entrepreneurial risk, the Wiesn can always be canceled at short notice.

"But we will do everything we can to ensure that it can take place."

Oktoberfest veteran Wiggerl Hagn from the Löwenbräuzelt adds: "I know the Oktoberfest from the beginning, there were only 40 guests there." Fewer visitors are no reason to cancel the Oktoberfest.

"Even if fewer visitors come: the tradition must live on!"
