Region - 55 people - and thus more than ever before - lost their lives in the alpine terrain last year 2021.

In 2022, 16 fatal mountain accidents had to be recorded again.

The police mountain guides of the Alpine Task Force (AEG) of the Police Headquarters Oberbayern Süd warn of the dangers that the currently prevailing wintry conditions in the mountains entail.

In the past few weeks, three people have lost their lives in tragic mountain accidents in the municipality of Unterammergau on the Sonnenberggrat.

A 41-year-old man from the district of Rosenheim fell around 200 meters to his death there on March 21.

Just eight days later, on March 29, search teams from the mountain rescue service and the police found two more people who had died in an accident.

The body of an initially missing mountain hiker (51) from Munich was found below the Sonnenberggrat and a second dead person was found very close to the site, it was a 48-year-old man from Ingolstadt.

Both hikers may have had an accident independently of each other.

Both bodies were recovered by helicopter and brought down into the valley by the forces of the Alpine task force and the mountain rescue service.

In both cases, a police mountain guide from the Alpine Task Force is conducting the investigation under the direction of the public prosecutor's office.

According to the current status of the police investigations, the cause of these tragic accidents was the prevailing wintry conditions in the mountains.

This applies to the entire area of the Alps in southern Upper Bavaria!

While most of the paths on the south side of the mountains are already free of snow, there is still snow and ice, especially on the shady sides.

And the danger of slipping off or slipping on hard snow should not be underestimated, even on relatively easy climbs!

In addition to suitable equipment, such as sturdy shoes or even crampons, mountain hikers should also consider ending their tour if the conditions appear critical.

A warning of individual dangerous spots is not possible due to the large number of such spots.
