Liu Yulong believes that the reason is that the variant virus Omicron has great trauma to the children's nervous central system and can lead to encephalitis, depending on the inflammation. Different symptoms appear depending on the location of the lesion.
And Queen Mary Hospital has confirmed that a girl had hallucinations and other symptoms when she fell ill, so the cause of death of the 14-year-old boy who fell from a building and died is still to be determined.

No cases judged to be unrelated to the new coronavirus
The COVID-19 epidemic in Hong Kong continues, and there have been many deaths or critical cases of children. The Central Co-ordinating Committee of Paediatrics of the Hospital Authority has set up an expert group to review the clinical management of fatal and critical cases of paediatric patients.
Liu Yulong, chairman of the expert group, pointed out that among the eight confirmed cases of child deaths, none of the cases has been classified as unrelated to the new crown virus. Three deaths were caused by the new crown virus, including girls aged 3 and 11 months who were in good health.
Severe brain swelling or brain trauma caused by the new crown
Liu explained that the 3-year-old girl had fever and cramps after the onset of the disease, and later found that her nervous system was inflamed.
The 11-month-old girl's heartbeat stopped for a while when she was sent to the hospital. Later, she was found to have severe brain edema, and it was believed that her death was basically related to encephalitis.
Another death due to new coronary pneumonia was a three-year-old girl. She had acute necrotizing encephalopathy caused by influenza and suffered from cerebral epilepsy. The onset of the disease on February 9 was postponed to February 11.
Liu pointed out that the team had spent a long time analyzing whether the girl died of new coronary pneumonia, and finally believed that "brain trauma caused by the new crown on the brain" cannot be ruled out.

The other was a four-year-old boy. Liu said that the boy was still "jumping and playing" in the afternoon before his death, but he vomited in the early morning. Although the cause of death has not yet been determined, it is believed to be related to the new crown pneumonia.
Liu Yulong said frankly that according to the literature, "it is impossible for children to die so quickly because of the new crown." He believes that Omicron has a great trauma to children's nervous central system, and can cause encephalitis and cause cramps in children.
Depending on the location of the inflamed lesions, there are different symptoms. The most obvious is that many people lose their sense of taste and smell after the onset of the disease, and even some patients experience hallucinations. For example, if there is inflammation in the retinal nerve, it will become abnormal.”

26 children are critically ill and a small number of non-long-term patients
There were 26 critical cases in children, and a small number of patients had no chronic disease.
The expert team analyzed that 12 of them were critically ill due to the new coronary pneumonia, and two were not related.
Liu Yulong explained that in unrelated cases there were children who had to be admitted to the intensive care unit due to inflammation of the tonsils.
However, he stressed that most of the children with wheezing are "no disease and painless", reminding parents to take their children to get vaccinated, and pay attention to warning signs such as wheezing, cramps, purple lips, difficulty breathing, and sudden change or confusion in consciousness, etc. .
