Presidential 2022: more than a million proxies have been filed

Nearly 49 million French people are registered on the electoral lists, and will therefore be able to participate in the presidential election, on April 10 and 24.

Three days before the first round, the Ministry of the Interior announces that more than a million French people have already taken the process to vote by proxy, including 250,000 just this Wednesday.

Since January 2022, it has been possible to give a proxy to a voter who votes in a municipality other than his own, but he must go to the polling station of the person whose proxy he is carrying.

The national voter number (NNE), a novelty for this election, is listed on the new electoral cards and can be retrieved online.

This number, which reliably identifies 48.7 million voters each, is essential for giving and receiving a power of attorney.

The power of attorney can now be done partly online, but the request must be validated by a visit to a police station, a gendarmerie brigade or a consulate, in order to verify the identity of the person who delegates his vote.

Despite all these new features to facilitate voting, 65% of French people anticipate unprecedented abstention for this election, according to an Odoxa Backbone Consulting poll for

Nearly one in four voters, or 24.4%, may not go to the polls on April 10.
