New York-Sana

Syria's permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh, affirmed that Syria rejected the draft resolution submitted to the General Assembly on suspending Russia's membership in the Human Rights Council because it involves a dangerous state of hostility and because it reinforces the hegemony of Western countries on the Council, imposing its vision and standards in the field of human rights, and using it as a tool for pressure. political targeting of certain countries.

In a statement today during the resumption of the emergency session of the General Assembly on the draft resolution to suspend the Russian Federation's membership in the Human Rights Council, Sabbagh indicated that this international forum is witnessing once again the exploitation of human rights issues to serve the narrow political interests of some countries and create a state of polarization and politicization to target the Russian Federation under the pretext of dealing with the situation. humanitarian assistance in Ukraine, stressing Syria's keenness to ensure respect for human rights and the importance of providing the necessary humanitarian assistance to all crisis areas and at the same time rejecting any politicization of humanitarian issues and stressing the importance of adopting the principles of neutrality, objectivity and non-discrimination in human rights issues.

Sabbagh pointed out that this coordinated Western move to defame the Russian Federation has nothing to do with human rights in Ukraine or anywhere else. And its allies, the city of Raqqa, and the killing of thousands of Syrians, we have not seen this international political and media mobilization to expose human rights violators.

Sabbagh explained that the General Assembly resolution establishing the Human Rights Council affirmed that all human rights are universal, indivisible, interdependent and interrelated, and that all human rights must be treated in a fair, just and equal manner and with the same attention. However, the practical practice that we have witnessed since the establishment of the Council until now proves Some Western countries adopt politicization, selectivity and double standards in dealing with human rights issues, focusing on the cases of specific countries to serve their political agendas, while at the same time turning a blind eye to other cases in which massive and systematic violations of human rights have been committed in the eyes and ears of the whole world and what the Palestinian people are exposed to. Over the decades, at the hands of the Israeli occupation forces is the clearest evidence of this.

And Syria's permanent representative to the United Nations indicated that another example of the hypocrisy of these countries is their disregard for the rights, security and safety of civilians, including children and women in the Donbass region, who have been subjected to a systematic Ukrainian hostile campaign and continuous bombardment for years. Despite this, we have not witnessed such a Western move in order to protect them and defend their rights. .

Sabbagh stressed that the invocation of those behind this move by the text of the eighth paragraph of the decision to establish the Human Rights Council raises serious concerns about the nature of the evidence that was invoked in the talk about the commission of massive and systematic violations of human rights and the credibility of the sources that were relied on and the neutral international mechanisms that confirmed the occurrence of such These violations and the identity of the perpetrators were identified, pointing out that the launching of accusations by some countries and their promotion through misleading propaganda by publishing photos and videos of unknown source and location and publishing them through open sources cannot be a solid basis for the General Assembly to take a decision on them.

Sabbagh explained that, as happened in Syria during the years of the terrorist war, the sessions of the Security Council and the General Assembly must always be preceded by plays and provocations, which is what we are witnessing now in the Ukrainian case to justify the decisions that Western and hostile countries plan to take in the name of their alleged international legitimacy.

Syria's permanent representative to the United Nations stressed that the draft resolution before the General Assembly involves a dangerous state of hostility and is a clear example of the policy of exclusion that Syria has long warned of, because suspending Russia's membership in the Human Rights Council will have a negative impact on the state of balance in it, its universality and its effectiveness. His role This suspension will reinforce the dominance of a group of Western countries over this important body, imposing their vision and standards in the field of human rights, and using them as a tool for political pressure and targeting specific countries.

Sabbagh said that Syria, based on its firm and firm position in rejecting all attempts to politicize and manipulate human rights, voted against the draft resolution, and it calls for distancing human rights issues from any political considerations and rejecting the policy of double standards. No to such decisions. If we are more frank and transparent, we see in such practices a threat to the very existence of the United Nations system.

The United Nations General Assembly voted in favor of suspending Russia from the United Nations Human Rights Council, where the resolution was supported by 93 members, 24 against, and 58 abstentions.
