The Australian authorities issued orders to evacuate thousands of people, after torrential rains hit the city of Sydney, located on the east coast of the country.
And the Reuters news agency quoted local authorities as saying today: "The city of Sydney last night was subjected to almost the equivalent of rain in a month, which flooded the city's roads with torrential rain and caused the evacuation of residents in a nursing home."
Emergency crews also urged the city's five million residents to avoid non-essential travel and prepare for possible evacuation orders.
The authorities indicated that the rain also caused a fuel leak at a site owned by the Ampoule Oil Refining Company in southern Sydney, which led to the fuel mixing with the flood water, but emergency crews said that "the spill has been contained and there are no risks."
And the authorities warned that the city of Sydney may be exposed to rain of up to 180 millimeters during the next 24 hours.
The average rainfall in Sydney has reached 1226.8 millimeters this year so far, which exceeds the annual average of 1213 millimeters of precipitation.
