The municipality of Unterföhring is investing 22 million in its new building yard.

It's now taking shape.

But first two animals had to move.

Unterföhring

– You can still see unfriendly concrete slabs, but they will soon disappear behind a modern façade made of wooden slats.

Glazed grey, with violet colored areas.

That could be appealing.

However, the new building yard in the north of Unterföhring on the secluded Birkenhofstraße will not catch the eye of many.

Unterföhring celebrated the topping-out ceremony on Wednesday.

Between the middle Isar canal and the motorway, directly behind the recycling center, a two-storey new building with a large inner courtyard is being built.

The municipality wants to combine the six locations of its building yard here.

Unterföhring is investing 22 million euros in the almost 7,000 square meter building, which will provide space for employees, tools and vehicles.

The cramped conditions should be a thing of the past.

The Bauhof team is expected to be able to move in in autumn 2023.

Mayor Andreas Kemmelmeyer (PWU) thanked his construction department that they "really have their hands full," he said: "It is known and visible that a lot is currently being built and implemented in Unterföhring."

Amphibians move to a new biotope

Employees have been waiting for the new building for a long time.

In April 2015, the municipal council unanimously approved it.

In 2019, the Knerer und Lang architectural office was awarded the contract for its design, and on May 6, 2021, the groundbreaking ceremony followed, which was actually planned six months earlier.

In fact.

Because when inspecting the 21,000 square meter property, the representatives of the municipality and the lower nature conservation authority came across a former stone storage and an inhabited pond.

Ironically, where the municipality wanted to build, two small animals had made their home: sand lizard and green toad.

This threatened to massively delay the project, as both amphibian species are strictly protected.

The lower nature conservation authority in the district office arranged for a special audit.

Specialist planners created a wet biotope nearby as an alternative refuge.

Only then should the excavators move in and seal the area required for the new building.

The municipality invested a total of 91,000 euros in moving costs for the green toad and sand lizard.

Now it is hoped that they will accept the biotope as a new home.

The team has grown a lot

When today's building yard on Münchner Straße was built in 1973, the team consisted of seven employees.

27 people are now employed there.

Machine and storage halls, workshops for electricians, painters and carpenters as well as a car wash and several vehicle halls for the 110 vehicles of the community are being built in the new building, for which minor repairs can also be carried out in the new building yard.

A hall for storing the 35 market huts that are needed for the Christmas market is also planned, as well as storage areas and an administration complex, changing rooms, showers and lounges.

Two company apartments, each measuring 80 square meters, are also planned.

"Everything is geared towards an increase of up to 30 employees," said Andreas Kemmelmeyer.
