Because the high energy prices cost many people, the traffic light coalition wants public transport to become cheaper - you have to pay attention to that.

Munich – use public buses and trains for 90 days for nine euros a month, i.e. for a total of 27 euros – the push by the traffic light coalition should sound great for passengers.

The concept is part of the 2022 relief package. Local public transport is to become temporarily cheaper for citizens.

These details about the special monthly ticket are initially known:

  • The 9-euro ticket is to be sold exclusively online in order to reduce the administrative effort.

  • Passengers who already have a public transport subscription should also benefit from the 9-euro ticket.

  • Their costs for their public transport subscription should then either not be debited or reimbursed.

  • In this case, the 9-euro ticket should be valid in the network areas for which the usual monthly ticket was intended.

Relief package 2022: 9-euro ticket for public transport as of May 1st?

When will the 9 euro ticket come out?

Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) considers May 1st to be a “not unrealistic option”.

The transport industry also assumes internally that the implementation will be feasible by then.

The Association of German Transport Companies (VDV) has already made a statement.

"We're trying to implement this as quickly as possible," spokesman Lars Wagner told WDR.

“May is kind of the unofficial goal of the industry.

We do everything we can to ensure that this can work.”

9-euro ticket: the local transport industry is also critical of the relief concept

However, the industry also noted that the 9-euro ticket endeavor will not be easy.

On March 25, the Handelsblatt quoted from a letter from VDV general manager Oliver Wolff to Maike Schaefer (Greens), chairwoman of the conference of transport ministers: “With a nine-euro subscription for the next three months, each month, an exorbitant additional loss of income can be assumed .

Single tickets will practically no longer be purchased, since a nine-euro subscription will completely cannibalize this type of ticket.” The discounted ticket could possibly start as early as the beginning of May.

Relief package 2022: Transport Minister Wissing against a zero-tariff ticket

Incidentally, the conference of transport ministers had previously brought a zero-tariff ticket into play.

However, Wissing rejected this idea.

With a 9-euro ticket, the demand could be understood much better, he argued: "With the 9-euro ticket, you know the number of additional passengers and can plan accordingly, thereby avoiding that there are occasional overloads."

The leaders of the SPD, Greens and FDP agreed on a relief package on March 24 in view of the high energy prices.

In addition to the 9-euro ticket, it also includes a 300-euro energy price flat rate, a fuel discount and a children's bonus.
