Beijing-Sana

Today, China renewed its criticism of the black sites established by the United States in various places around the world under the pretext of the "war on terror", stressing that these prisons are typical examples of Washington's violation of the rule of law and human rights.

Xinhua quoted Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian as saying at a regular press conference that "the US Central Intelligence Agency has set up these black sites in many countries under the pretext of the war on terrorism, and the alleged terrorists are subject to arbitrary detention in secret and confessions are extracted from them through torture, which It sparked widespread criticism from the international community.”

Zhao pointed out that such sites, including the notorious Guantanamo prison, Bagram prison in Afghanistan and Abu Ghraib in Iraq, have been implicated in serious scandals, including the torture of prisoners and the use of brutal and horrific methods in dealing with them.

Zhao explained that the report issued by the Costs of War Project of the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University, which was released at the beginning of 2022, indicated that in the wake of the September attacks, the United States orchestrated a system of black sites in at least 54 countries and regions around the world, and more than More than 100,000 people on these sites, including women and children.

Zhao pointed out that despite all these facts, no US official has yet been held accountable for developing and implementing the secret detention and torture program, noting that US taxpayers spend 540 million US dollars annually just to hold prisoners in Guantanamo.

The British newspaper The Guardian had previously published a declassified report showing that a prisoner in a secret CIA detention site in Afghanistan was used as a living model to teach trained interrogators who lined up to take turns beating his head against a plywood wall and dousing him with ice water.
