Hungarian government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs announced today that his country is committed to the gas contracts signed with Russia, noting that paying for gas in rubles would not constitute a violation of European sanctions imposed on Moscow.
In an interview with CNN, Kovacs said: “Budapest has a bilateral contract with Moscow, and the payment currency is a technical issue,” adding, “The European Union does not yet have joint purchases of gas and oil for European countries.. Therefore, we still abide by the contracts concluded with Russia.” regarding oil and gas.
Kovacs pointed out that the Hungarian economy and people depend on Russian gas by 85 percent and therefore cannot be dispensed with.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban recently announced that his country is ready to pay for Russian gas in rubles, while his foreign minister, Peter Szijjarto, said that his country is now working on a technical solution to the issue of paying for Russian gas in rubles, noting that Hungary's energy supplies were and will remain safe.
