Satellite images collected and analyzed by Maxar Technologies show a 12-kilometer-long military convoy moving south through the town of Velkyi Burluk in eastern Ukraine on April 8.

The city is located to the east of Kharkiv, near Ukraine's border with Russia.

The images show "armored vehicles, trucks with towed artillery and support equipment" that make up the convoy, Maxar said.

A bit of context: Ukrainian officials say significant fighting is taking place in the east of the country, with heavy shelling reported across the Donbas region, ahead of what they warn may be a major Russian offensive.

Ukraine's defense intelligence chief told CNN on Friday that Russian troops are regrouping across the border and plan to advance toward Kharkiv.

Authorities have urged the evacuation of civilians from the region as Russian forces concentrate in southern and eastern Ukraine.

Before Russia's invasion, a 40-mile-long Russian military convoy made up of tanks, armored vehicles and towed artillery struck fear into Ukrainian defenders as it lumbered toward its capital, Kyiv, in northern Ukraine.

But the convoy stalled when it faced stiff Ukrainian resistance and challenges in accessing supplies, before dispersing without reaching the city.

Russia's war in Ukraine: here's what you need to know so far

It's already past noon in Kyiv and throughout Ukraine.

The focus of Russia's invasion has shifted east, with renewed attacks overnight and devastation in Kramatorsk, where Russian missiles killed dozens of Ukrainians trying to flee.

This is what you should know so far.

Putin appoints new commander

Russian President Vladimir Putin has appointed Army General Alexander Dvornikov as theater commander of Russia's military campaign in Ukraine, according to a US official and a European official, after in the first phase of the invasion of Moscow, Russian troops failed to capture territory in central Ukraine and ultimately withdrew from the capital, Kyiv.

Dvornikov, the first commander of Russia's military operations in Syria, could bring a new level of coordination to an assault now expected to focus on Ukraine's eastern Donbas region, rather than on multiple fronts.

russian convoy

Satellite images collected and analyzed by Maxar Technologies show a 12-kilometer-long Russian military convoy east of Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine.

On Friday, Ukraine's defense intelligence chief told CNN that Russian troops were regrouping across the border and planned to advance toward Kharkiv in what could be a major attack.

new attacks

Valentyn Reznichenko, head of the Dnipropetrovsk regional military administration in east-central Ukraine, said on Sunday that there had been a series of attacks in the region over the past 24 hours.

A Russian attack on the regional capital of Dnipro destroyed infrastructure, he added.

Zelensky meets with leaders

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the UK for its decision to send more deadly aid to Ukraine after a meeting with Prime Minister Boris Johnson in Kyiv on Saturday.

Zelensky also met Austrian Foreign Minister Karl Nehammer in the capital that day, following his talks with European Union leaders on Friday.

civilian casualties

The grisly scale of Russia's assault on Ukrainian civilians in the north becomes clearer in the wake of the withdrawal of forces from the region.

A UK military intelligence update on Saturday said evidence, including mass graves, indicates non-combatants were "disproportionately targeted".

Ukrainian authorities have found hundreds of civilian bodies in cities near Kyiv, including Bucha and Makariv.

Preparing for the attack

Ukrainian officials continue to warn of what could be a major Russian offensive taking place in the east of the country, where heavy fighting is already taking place.

Ukraine's Defense Intelligence Chief said Russian troops are regrouping across the border and plan to advance on the eastern city of Kharkiv in what could be a major offensive.

Go out

Nine evacuation corridors have been agreed in the east and south of the country, including one for private vehicles from Mariupol, Ukraine's deputy prime minister said on Sunday.

The Ukrainian military has said it is working to "adjust" routes for civilians following a Russian missile attack on a train station in Kramatorsk that Ukrainian authorities say killed more than 50 people on Friday.
