Corona: Majority has lost confidence in crisis management

Most corona rules are history, compulsory vaccination has failed - and Germans' belief in the government's successful pandemic crisis management is waning. That shows a SPIEGEL survey.

Lost trust: Karl Lauterbach during a press conference on the pandemic situation

The latest decisions in corona policy have caused the population to lose confidence in the federal government's crisis management.

This is the result of a survey by the opinion research institute Civey for SPIEGEL.

Most recently, the nationwide corona protection measures had largely expired, and the federal states can only impose stricter restrictions in regional infection hotspots.

The obligation to vaccinate failed in the Bundestag, and Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach announced that the obligation to isolate infected people would soon end – only to then collect the decision again on a TV talk show.

Almost two-thirds of Germans now state that they have lost confidence in the federal government’s corona policy in the past few weeks.

Only about every fourth citizen has not lost their belief in the right decisions in dealing with the pandemic.

According to the survey, the loss of trust is also great among the supporters of the traffic light parties.

The majority of supporters of the FDP and the Greens have been critical of the past few weeks, while more than 40 percent of potential SPD voters still do.

The crisis of confidence is therefore most serious among the supporters of the AfD and Union.

The past few weeks have also apparently damaged the reputation of the Federal Minister of Health.

According to the survey, only a minority still trusts Karl Lauterbach to lead the country well through the corona crisis.

29 percent of Germans are "rather satisfied" or "satisfied" with his crisis management.

Significantly more than half, on the other hand, are not convinced of the work of the 59-year-old.

At least the supporters of the Social Democrats are loyal to Lauterbach: 51 percent think his crisis management is good or okay.

In the camps of the other parties, however, satisfaction falls significantly.

A little more than a third of Greens supporters rate Lauterbach's work during the pandemic positively, compared to only around 13 percent of the voters of the coalition partner FDP.

The minister's crisis management found even more approval from the sympathizers of the opposition parties CDU/CSU and Left.
