Far from the 40% set for the decision to be binding, the president opens the door to lower the participation threshold for future referendums

Andrés Manuel López Obrador celebrated this Monday the results of the consultation on the revocation of the mandate, where he achieved resounding support from his followers, and took the opportunity to charge again against the National Electoral Institute (INE).

Sunday's appointment ended with support for the continuity of the Mexican president of 91.1% of the votes with a participation of 17.5%, according to preliminary data.

“It has been a very good lesson in democracy,” the president pointed out during his daily morning conference, “despite all the traps or boycotts by the INE, which was not applied to put polling stations everywhere and there were municipalities where there were no polling stations.”

More than 15 million Mexicans gave their support to the president so that he continues and ends his term in 2024. Due to the budget cuts that caused strong clashes between Morena, the party in power, and the electoral body, the logistical deployment of the consultation it was three times less than in the election, for example, last year: from 160,000 voting booths to 57,000.

López Obrador has emphasized that difference to respond to opposition readings that underline that Sunday's result is half of the 30 million votes that boosted the leader of Morena to the presidency in 2018.

To measure Sunday's results, López Obrador also gave the example of voting in the 2006 presidential election, where he narrowly lost to Felipe Calderón.

“On that occasion I got 14.8 million, despite Calderón's inflated votes.

Because the reality was different.

The president also showed a table with the States where the most participation was registered.

Tabasco (35%), the president's birthplace, Chiapas (27.8%) and Campeche (27.6%) led the list.

While Durango (9.4%), Aguascalientes (9.3%) and Jalisco (9%) registered the lowest.

Despite the good general result, above the floor set by Morena during the campaign, the figures are still far from the 40% set for the decision to be binding.

The president also opened the door on Monday to reduce the participation threshold for future referendums.

“We think that 40% is very high.

We are going to make reforms so that it can be reduced and that it be 30% or even 20%”.

López Obrador also sent messages to the main opposition forces, the PRI, the PAN and the PRD, who defended his strategy of not participating until the end.

"Morena turned her head and perverted the purpose of a democratic process such as the revocation of the mandate to satisfy her own ego and continue deceiving Mexicans," said Alejandro Moreno, leader of the PRI.

The leader of the PAN, Marko Cortés, maintains a similar thesis, considering the vote a farce, since in the end it has only served to strengthen the president and the government.
