Olivier Galland: "The concerns of young people no longer have a political translation"

INTERVIEW – A third of young people abstained in the first round of the presidential election. For the sociologist, the political disaffiliation of young people results from a disinterest aggravated by a weakening of adherence to the democratic ideal.

- When political discourse is addressed to young people, it is most often by postulating that “

the youth

” is in bad shape.

The picture you paint is less pessimistic…

The youth of France is not as unhappy as they say, provided we go into a little detail.

In our survey, 82% of young people say they are “

happy

”.

Other surveys have shown that they are also overwhelmingly optimistic about their personal future.

But of course, in reality there is not a single youth.

We interviewed 8,000 young people with the Institut Montaigne, and showed that young people who have a diploma, and even more so a higher education diploma, are doing rather well - despite a transition period before employment on a permanent contract which is often difficult.

At the age of 30, 80% of young graduates have a stable job...
