Strong wind pushes a passenger ferry against a car ferry in the port of Norddeich on the North Sea on Sunday.

Five passengers are slightly injured.

Norddeich – When two ferries collided in the port of Norddeich in the district of Aurich in Lower Saxony*, five people were slightly injured on Sunday (April 10th, 2022).

However, the passengers did not have to be treated and were able to continue their journey to the island of Juist a little later with another ferry, as a spokesman for the water police in Wilhelmshaven said on Monday.

According to initial findings, the collision occurred shortly after the ship left the port of Norddeich on Sunday afternoon.

At the time of the accident there were around 320 passengers on board.

According to the police, the reversing passenger ferry was hit by a strong side wind shortly after leaving and pressed against a car ferry lying on the quay wall, as reported by hna.de.*

The collision shattered several window panes in the saloon below deck.

According to the water police, the broken glass injured five of the passengers present.

The collision left only a few scratches and paint damage on the car ferry.

The police estimate the damage at a five-digit sum.

From this Monday, experts from several authorities should examine the ship more closely.

A spokesman for the shipping company Norden-Frisia said that the passenger ship left for Juist as reinforcements in front of the regular ferry because of the high Easter traffic at the weekend.

Collision of ferries in the North Sea: Tourist rush expected at Easter

This is usual on arrival days with high volumes.

Now the ship probably has to go to a shipyard.

"We are now missing the ship towards Easter," said the spokesman.

However, he emphasized that the arrival traffic to Juist was ensured with the help of other ships in the shipping company fleet.

With the start of the holidays in several federal states, numerous Easter holidaymakers traveled to the coast and the East Frisian Islands at the weekend.

The ferry companies had adjusted to the many travelers and sometimes used additional ferries.

Easter holidaymakers are flocking to the coast - the holiday season is starting

The incident is inconvenient right now, because many holidaymakers made their way to the coast and the East Frisian Islands at the beginning of the Easter holidays.

The ferry companies in East Friesland had prepared for many guests at the start of the holiday season and therefore planned additional ferry connections in some cases.

For the tourism companies on the North Sea coast of Lower Saxony, it is the first largely regular start of the season since the beginning of the corona pandemic in 2020. On some East Frisian islands, beaches that have been worn away after the sometimes severe winter storm surges must first be filled up again before the beach chairs can be put back in their places.

In September 2021 there was a much larger drama in the North Sea.

At that time, a sailing yacht capsized in the North Sea between Langeoog and Baltrum, and one of the sailors was a man from Göttingen.* The North Sea, with its coasts and islands, is not only a region of great importance as a tourist destination.
