“Partygate”: Boris Johnson, his wife and a minister fined

2022-04-12T19:05:31.523Z

The head of the British government will be sanctioned for having violated the confinement in force during the epidemic of Covid-19.

Boris Johnson, who has just made a remarkable visit to kyiv, hoped to have turned the page on “Partygate”.

Last February, the scandal caused by the parties organized in Downing Street at the heart of the confinement periods, in 2020 and 2021, had almost cost him his mandate as leader of the Conservative Party and head of government.

The Prime Minister, whose popularity had fallen sharply after this scandal, has since made his mea culpa before the deputies and claims not to have broken the law.

A fortnight ago, he seemed to consider that the case was behind him, even bantering with the Conservative parliamentarians letters sent by some of them at the beginning of the year to demand a vote of no confidence against him.

But the time is over for joking: 10 Downing Street revealed on Tuesday afternoon that the head of government, his wife and his finance minister, Rishi Sunak, are about to receive a ticket from the police Londoner.

For the moment, no one knows which is the party for which the Prime Minister, Carrie Johnson and Rishi Sunak are about to be sanctioned, or even if it is a single event.

The fine may relate to the surprise birthday party Carrie Johnson hosted for the prime minister in June 2020. Rishi Sunak, the finance minister, was in Boris Johnson's office for a business meeting that day , according to the media.

Acknowledge their fault

As soon as the news became public, the leaders of the opposition to the Conservative government called for the resignation of the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance.

“(They) broke the law and repeatedly lied to the British.

They should both resign.

The Conservatives are totally unfit to govern,” said Labor leader Keir Starmer.

The group of families bereaved by Covid-19, Bereaved Families for Justice UK, has also called on Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak to resign.

“They broke the law and, worst of all, they took us for idiots,” reacted the group on Twitter.

Tuesday afternoon, 10 Downing Street had not indicated whether Boris Johnson, Carrie Johnson and Rishi Sunak intended to settle their ticket – and acknowledge their fault – or contest it, which would take the case to court.

It is not unlikely that this police violation will lead to the resignation of the Minister of Finance.

Considered a time as a potential successor to Boris Johnson at the head of the conservatives, Rishi Sunak is now very unpopular with the British because of his policy and recent revelations concerning the tax situation of his wife, in particular.

Boris Johnson certainly has no intention of withdrawing from 10 Downing Street.

However, the London police investigation is far from over.

The Metropolitan Police said they handed out 30 tickets yesterday in connection with just three of the 12 parties they are investigating: the fallout from 'Partygate' is not over.
