(CNN Spanish) --
Real Madrid suffered and was about to be eliminated.
After losing 3-1 in the first leg against Chelsea, the London team struck a blow and led 3-0 after 75 minutes at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium in Madrid with goals from Mason Mount, Antonio Rüdiger and Timo Werner.
But a masterful pass from Luka Modric and an accurate definition from Rodrygo gave life to the merengue team to tie the series in the 80th minute and force extra time.
In added time, Benzema, an idol of Real Madrid and a strong candidate for the Ballon d'Or this year, scored Madrid's second goal for a 5-4 aggregate victory, with which the team led by Carlo Ancelotti got a long-suffering pass to the semifinal.
It was Real Madrid's tenth Champions League semi-final in 12 years.
The Spanish Villarreal surprised by eliminating the superpowerful Bayern Munich after the 1-0 in favor in the first leg and the 1-1 draw on Tuesday.
Robert Lewandowski (rumored to join Barcelona next season) opened the scoring in the 52nd minute and temporarily leveled the series for the Bavarians, but Samu Chukwueze made it 1-1 to seal the submarine team's historic qualification.
In the other quarter-final matches, Liverpool hopes to seal the classification against Benfica (3-1 in the first leg in favor of the English) and Atlético de Madrid tries to overcome Manchester City's 1-0 lead.
