It was one of the key measures of the last five-year term.

Launched by the Philippe government before being suspended on March 16, 2020, the pension reform remains a very sensitive subject, especially in this period between two rounds.

Asked about the subject Monday in Carvin, in the Pas-de-Calais where he went with Gérald Darmanin, Emmanuel Macron partly detailed his project, first at the microphone of Bruce Toussaint on BFMTV, before answering to the questions of the inhabitants during a walkabout.

And the president hinted that he was ready to stall on the pension reform.

Anything but a "retreat", according to his Minister of the Interior.

Open to the idea of a referendum on the subject, the President of the Republic thus indicated that he was ready to "move the relationship to time and say that we do not necessarily carry out a reform until 2030 if I feel too much anxiety in people”.

According to him, "65 years are not a dogma" and a "review clause in 2027" is possible, as is a possible lowering to 64 years.

Also, the Head of State promised to “consult” before moving forward on the reform: “I say today the system is no longer funded.

If we accept a deficit on our pensions, that means: our children are the ones who will pay.

Emmanuel Macron also explained that he wanted to bring the minimum pension to 1100 euros for full careers and to index pensions to inflation.

The day after these announcements and this readjustment, Prime Minister Jean Castex declared on Tuesday on RTL that he was one of those "who are always in favor of consultation, dialogue and negotiation".

"If we do nothing, the risk is that pensions will decrease", he however warned, judging it necessary to "raise the age" of retirement, to 64 or 65 years old: "We live longer , so you have to contribute longer.

“We listen to what the people say when they go to vote”

Faced with the will of the Head of State to adjust the pension reform if necessary, the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin declared on Tuesday that it was not a question of a retreat.

“These elections are both serious and astonishing.

(…) When we are Republicans, we listen to what the people say when they go to vote, ”reacted the minister on France Info.

“It's called listening.

(…) The president went so far as to say that he could, I put the conditional, propose it to the referendum”, he added.

On CNews, the Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire argued that the reform will always relate to a starting age of 65, “with possibilities of negotiation”.

“This is strictly what Emmanuel Macron said, he showed openness.

A pension reform is not to be taken or left, but it is essential to save our pay-as-you-go pension system.

This is a priority, it must be done,” added the minister.
