The death toll from the recent floods that hit the South African city of Durban has risen to 253.
"Last night we received about 253 bodies at the mortuaries of two hospitals in the town of Durban," Provincial Health Officer Nomagogo Semelin Zulu told ENCA TV today.
An earlier toll had indicated that 54 people had died due to floods and landslides in South Africa.
The floods damaged thousands of homes, while heavy rains cut off electricity, closed many roads and disrupted water supplies, which necessitated the army's intervention in evacuating the besieged residents.
