The front pages of the British press this Wednesday: Boris Johnson as "Pinocchio Prime Minister", another newspaper writes "Led by liars and criminals".
Reason for the excitement: Johnson had been fined in connection with the "Partygate" affair.
On Tuesday evening he issued a statement:
Boris Johnson, British Prime Minister: »
My apologies once again, and in the spirit of openness and humility, I want to make absolutely clear what happened that day.
My day started just after 7am and I chaired 8 sessions in number 10 including the cabinet committee deciding on the COVID strategy.
I went to school in Hemel Hempstead which kept me away from Downing Street for over 4 hours.
And in between all those commitments on a day that happened to be my birthday, there was a brief gathering in the cabinet room just after 2pm that lasted less than 10 minutes during which the people I worked with kindly offered their congratulations.
I have to say quite frankly that it never occurred to me at the time that this could have been a rule violation.
It's not out of the question that Johnson could face further penalties as police investigate a slew of celebrations during the coronavirus lockdown.
Labor leader Starmer called for Johnson's resignation, "Britain deserves better".
